Ok so just over 2 years ago I had a mirena coil fitted. Had the expected bleeding for the first 6 months then it seemed to settle down. Then last Feb/march I had two horrendous periods in succession huge clots, went on for ages, kept stopping and starting etc. I went to the GP who did a pregnancy test -ve and referred me for a scan. Scan was fine no issues with the coil which is in place etc. (I have always been able to feel my strings). The GPs theory was that maybe my body was "just having a clear out - see if it settles down". SO I left it and its been fine until the last month whenI started again with a very heavy period. I actually decided to keep a diary to show the doctor. here it is.
7/10/11 light bleeding
9/10/11 heavy with clots
(feeling generally unwell)
14/10/11 bleeding eases
15/10/11 heavy bleeding
17/10/11 light bleeding (brown)
18/10/11 very light spotting
19/10/11 flooding with clots
20/10/11 brown discharge
21/10/11 brown discharge then at 4:30pm flooding and one big clot followed by heavy bleeding
22/10/11 red bleeding (like a normal period)
22/10/11 - 29/10/11 light bleeding (brownish and red)
29/10/11 - very light brown
7/11/11 - brown blood after sex
8/11/11 brown discharge
9/11/11 brown discharge/red
10/11/11 red bleeding (like a normal period)

SO - is this normal for having a mirena???? Also another thing that has been bothering me but that could be unrelated is that for at least the last year I have been really really itchy (no discharge) Its so bad I think i have sores on my vulva.
I know the dr is really busy at the moment with all the winter flu season etc so don't want to bother them unnecessarily but would you make another appointment?
TIA

I would make the appointment, it doesn't sound right to me. Not that I think it's sinister, but maybe time to get mirena taken out? I had similar bleeding patterns although I was on the depo jag. Once I stopped it, it got better almost immediately! Go see the doctor and get their advice. Hope you get it sorted :)

I'd definitely make an appt and with all the bleeding I'd ask them to check your iron levels too.

my GYN told me that mirena is like marmite - you either love it or you hate it. For some it works, for others it doesnt.

I had mine removed and had a NOVASURE ablation done at the same time after 16 day periods and 4 infections in 8 months with Mirena. SO far ...best thing ever. No periods! Grin

However, I am at an age where we will not be having more children.

If you are done with babies, then I would recommend Novasure.

If not, go see your GP. You might need to look at an alternative contraception (like mini pill) or to take pill plus mirena or take transexamic acid to control the bleeding.

I had a Modena for heavy bleeding and the bleeding got worse only tanexamic acid helped. I had it taken out which was the lesser of two evils. You have to make a special appt for removal and I chose to have this done by the gynae in local hospital.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I've spoken to DH and think am going to ask to have it removed. I've made an appointment to see the coil specialist at my GPs but not until the 22nd. Will ask them to check my iron levels too then!
Thanks alot.
