she had a presription last week for tonsilitus, since then the end of that dose, her eyes are streaming, nose running and a hard horrible cough
awake at least 5 times last night til 5 then slept til 9, shes 3.
if i go to docs is there anything for this

i read croup (ekk) is associated with temp, not the nose thing?

Sounds horrid, poor love - no experience of tonsilitis (yet) but DD had croup with no temperature. She had a slightly runny nose/cold with it, nearly lost her voice (think 2 yr old Marlene Dietrich) and a barky cough with very noisy breathing at night.
On the other hand, she had a cold recently (not croup) with a very hard horrible cough for a few days. Does your DD have a temp?

hermykne · 30/12/2005 13:37

no shes no temp eli,
is there somethig for croup or does it just hvae to burn out
the voice thing is exactly how dd is!

what's the cough like? croup is very distinctive, barking kind of noise (think sealions!)...
if it IS croup then steam will help. sit her in the bathroom with the hot taps running.
that may be of some benefit anyway as will help unblock her nose

If her breathing gets difficult, there are treatments to help that - but for mild or mildish croup, no, sadly, no treatments. We put a humidifier in DD's room at night (esp. if you have central heating, day or night, good idea to add moisture - wet towel on radiator, bowl of water by it, anything) which seemed to ease her cough. Also, just keeping her calm and quiet, and propping her up to breathe more easily at night (we put pillow under mattress for extra prop). If you're worried though, do call the doc!

Hermy - She would get anti'Bs for croup.... its a bacterial infection of the vocal chords (and surrounding area).... I don't think its associated with a mucousy cough, just the weird goose like HONK!

EliBeentoSantasGrotto · 30/12/2005 13:49

Really? My DD wasn't given AntiBs.....and I think they told us it was viral? Were we done out of croup-relief?! Sorry if I got it wrong, sounds like there are different experiences then...

EliBeentoSantasGrotto · 30/12/2005 13:50

Oh wait - just looked it up. Apparently, most croup is viral - but it can occasionally be caused by bacteria or 'other causes'. So maybe treatment depends on cause..

SackAche · 30/12/2005 13:50

Eli - I suppose the infection can be viral or bacterial..... either way its an infection of the vocal chords and causes the 'bark' and is called Croup..... but following a cold secondary infections are more commonly bacterial.

SackAche · 30/12/2005 13:51

Oops, posts crossed! That clears that up then!

EliBeentoSantasGrotto · 30/12/2005 13:52

Lol - my thoughts exactly! Hope DH is ok, SA..

SackAche · 30/12/2005 13:53

Thanks
