Ear pain and colds remedies?!

I have had a cold for the past few days. Very mild sore throat, built up to runny nose but then yesterday my left ear was extremely painful. I am pretty sure it has fluid in it, I can hear it moving around. It's not painful right now but I'm sure it will get painful later! Is there anything that I can do to lessen the pain or make it easier to deal with? I can't hear anything out of that ear either.

i have in the past warmed a little olive oil and put a couple of drops in the sore ear then block with cotton wool to keep it in which helped loads.

Thanks :) I'm always paranoid about the warm oil thing (more about getting it too hot) but will have to try that. My ear still feels blocked but doesn't hurt any more thankfully!
