Unable to pee after a general anasthetic - anyone else had this?

I am going to have a coil fitted under a GA tomorrow. The two ops I've had under GA, both I have been unable to pee afterwards despite feeling fit to burst!

II mentioned this to the nurse today at the pre-op and she looked at me like I was mad. I know that I have heard of this before.

Someone tell me this is quite common and why it happens please?

a GA relaxes all your muscles so it is not surprising that your bladder shuts down for a bit.

why are you having a GA for a coil- is it the mirena which is bigger?

I have it attempted twice, last time by gynae who said there was no chance of getting it in, tilted womb I think? Yes it is the mirena.

It will be a very short op so maybe not too bad this time?

I had this time but assumed as I'd had surgery on my uterus then maybe my bladder had been bruised, pushed aside, etc. They wouldn't let me home till I weed.

When I was in hospital the lady in the next bed had this (after brain surgery so not fiddling about with pelvis stuff). She didn't get the help she needed and put in a complaint and a specialist nurse came up and apologised saying it can happen after a GA.

If you feel uncomfortable ask for a nurse to use a catheter but don't leave it too long as it might take them a while to get time do it.

I had this after a spinal anaesthetic and when it passed I was DESPERATE!! The nurse who brought me a bedpan said it was quite normal.

I first had it after a laparoscopy and they wouldn't let me home til I had gone for a wee, but they left it too long to put the catheter in and it was agony and they couldn't carry on. Finally managed a couple of drops about 5hrs later, and then on.

Second time was after leg op and I was pg too so very uncomfortable. I drank so much as they told me that I could be dehydrated that eventually when they did put a catheter in I filled the bag to near overflowing almost instantly!

I am concerned about today because it is day surgery in a day unit and I am supposed to go home after 2hrs. What if I can pee? Will they keep me in? Or will they not be bothered and I be sent home with it?

Happened to me too, both after GA and after spinal block. Both times finally managed to pee a few hours later, after drinking lots of water and walking around a bit.

It happened to me 4 weeks ago after an op to remove my rib (so nowhere down below) I was desperate but couldn't go so they had to catherise me. However following my 2nd op 2 weeks ago on my lung, there was no problem at all and I went straight on a bedpan in ICU.

If they put you on a drip like they did me, maybe that will help you go? I think that they called it a hartmans drip?

they should check you have passed urine ok before they discharge you!

All done, waiting to go home. It was fine this time (typically, as I was worrying!)
