Please someone tell me this isn't a trip to A&E?

Not necessarily, it depends on the shape of the thing.
My dd swallowed a metal thing off the end of a drawer handle and I phoned nhs direct about it. They said that if the object is not it's unlikely to do any harm and will probably just pass through.

If she seems OK in herself, I would just wait and see how she gets on. My dd was fine, though I did have to get a new handle in the end

Oh thank you. It's just one of the little pegs, only about 2cm. One minute she's saying no she didn't swallow it, the next "it's in my tummy". Trouble is she's got a thing about doctors and making her dollies better, so she could be saying she swallowed it just to get to see him! She just announced she wants to go and sleep in the doctor's bed.
