What cough/congestion mixtures can a 2.5yo take?

Hi all, ds has a terrible cough and snotty nose, but Medised doesn't seem to be doing much for him. We also have Meltus for chesty coughs, again which doesn't seem to do much. This has been bad for five days now.

What else can a 2.5yo take? Are there any 'more adult' type ones he can take rather than the 'baby' ones? (obviously I'd double check the small print on any suggestions made).

Also trying to get him used to a 'snot sucker' (as someone put it on MN!) and have a humidifier in his room at night.

What works for you? Thanks so much.

From what I know, cough medicines largely don't do much, anyway.

I tend to make the kids stay in the bathroom while I run a very hot shower. The steam sometimes helps.

if you are interested in something herbal...Bioforce ivy-thyme complex is fantastic. we use it all winter, just add a few drops to every beaker of drink they have. you can get it in most health shops or online.

also bioforce plantago great for runny nose, add to sane drink as ivy-thyme.

Ah, I was going to say Medised when I saw your title. I'm so sorry, it's rotten for them isn't it? I would say Frosty's advice is defintely worth trying.

we use a karvol vaporiser in dd's room and if she is really bad we also put a couple of drops of karvol or olbas oil on a hanky and put it in her pillow.

I always find childrens nurofen works better than calpol/medised but of course you could give both nurofen and calpol if you wished (stagger the doses to give more consistent pain relief).

Benilyn children's cough medicine.

They do a night time one that knocks them out as well, always a bonus! Well, the packet says 'aids restfull sleep'.

Both mine have sounded like sealions over the past week and it does help.

Vicks Vaporub too on the chest at night.

Hope all your little ones are well at the mo, it's miserable for ds as he wants to get excited about xmas but doesn't have the energy... I'm sure he will on the day!

The wonderful drug of Sudafed worked a treat for us! After having DD diagnosed as asthamtic and pumped full of steroids for best part of a year, we weren't convinced it was as there is none in the family and she never wheezed. Finally saw a private paediatrician and he said it wasn't asthma but basically a post nasal drip and thats what gave her such a shocking cough at night. We had tried EVERYTHING but this stuff is like a miracle cure!! I could shout it from the rooftops!!! We've never looked back and have only needed to give it a couple of times since! tixylix do one that helps dry out the snot a little
we find it better than medised and as it does not contain paracetamol you can give that separately

Yup, Tixylix cold and cough. And Olbas oil for children - a few drops on his sleeping bag and also in a bowl of water on the radiator. Can you raise the head end of his bed at all? It really helped when when ours had croup. Good luck.
