blotchy red rash - anyone know any websites showing rashes

DS2 (nearly 3) seems to have an intermittent blotchy red rash, no other symptoms apart from an ongoing cold.

It is all over his trunk, spreading down his legs and arms - not on face. In place it looks almost like a fairy ring - ie nothing in the middle just and irregular circle of red - one about 4cm across.

Any ideas what it may be ?

Slapped Cheek aka Fifth Disease ? very red cheeks but more broken, lacy rash on body and limbs. Seem to remember it did come and go for a week or two.

LIZS · 18/12/2005 19:09

Oh, scratch that theory, just seen your pic !

don't think it is slapped cheek - he hasn't got red cheeks (his brother had for a few days last week - but no other symptoms).

Throckenholt, I think it looks like an urticarial rash to me. You can sometimes get them with viral illnesses like colds. Just a guess, mind!!

I had urticaria as a child, it looked a lot like this. No one ever found out why, but I seem to remember being given antihistamines for the itching, at some point. Poor old DS, hope it goes soon!

Dermatlas is very informative...

I've just come back from A&E with ds2 (2.5) because of a rash v similar. It's been coming and going for days, but tonight it really flared and ds2's right eye also swelled so much it closed up - this in particular really worried me, hence the trip to the hospital just to be on the safe side.

Lovely A&E doctor said it was urticaria as a result of a virus and gave me piriton to give him over the next few days.

throckenholt · 19/12/2005 07:46

thanks people - gave pyriton and seems to have gone overnight - I think it is probably a viral thing - he has had it about 3 times in 4 days - never any pain - and it goes again in a few hours. Don't think it is an allergy because he has had nothing new or different. Oddly DH last week woke up 3 night running with very itchy legs and a rash - again gone in a few hours - maybe its the same thing.

Just wanted to check that we weren't missing something obvious.

hi folks - just googled urticaria - that's definitely it. Odd it doesn't seem to be itchy in this case (although DH said his was very itchy).

Now will have to wait and see if the rest of us develop it - probably on Christmas day when we have run out of pyriton - will have to stock up on it !
