Weird bruise-like patch on thumb, very painful. Any ideas?

I was washing up this morning when my thumb started to feel painful. When I looked at it, it seemed a little blue. It then turned dark purple which faded and now I have a lighter patch of purple all over the main fingerprint part of my thumb.

It hurts a lot. I know exactly what I was doing when the pain started and I definitely hadn't banged or injured it in any way.

Anyone had similar or know what it could be?

Thanks

I've had just the same and I want to know what it is too. It's happened a few times-very bizarre!

It's like the tiniest area but really painfull. We need a name so we can google it!!!!

Burst blood vessel - I get them occassionally. Not a very medical description though.

What causes them?

No idea, but they hurt. I have googled it and the answers seem quite variable.

I sometimes get this. I've had it on my thumb and other fingers, but mostly I get it on the sole of my foot or under a toe.

It starts with quite intense pain and sometimes I can feel a lump. If I press the lump the pain goes and it bruises quite alarmingly but the bruise disappears within a day usually.

Once my thumb swelled up and then bruised - very strange. It's called Achenbach's Syndrome and doesn't seem to indicate anything serious.

Thanks everyone.

It is much better this morning.

It really was the weirdest thing - so painful and impressive looking bruise and now less than 24 hours later it is almost back to normal.

I was curious if there are any further health concerns of Achenbachs Syndrome?? Could this be a blood clot that causes more concern? How long does it normally last? Does it help to ice it? Mine has come on quickly and hurts pretty badly.
