he has never suffered with ear ache/infections before (he is 4 1/2) so not really sure what to do, he also has a slight cold and thought the two might be related, should I take him to the docs or will it clear up when the cold goes?? Have given him calpol, what else will help??? Advice very much appreciated.

take him to the gp - if he has an ear infection, might need antibiotics

hunkermunker · 16/12/2005 10:17

Calpol and nurofen will help. The doctor is unlikely to give antibiotics as earaches that start with a cold are viral and there's no point taking antibiotics for them.

Hope he's better soon.

we are all suffering ear infections here atm, dd2 eardrums look like to burst the gp said yesterday. she has anti biotics and neurofen/calpol.

my ears are also aching, so have gp appointment this evening.

Does he have a high temperature? If not, then it's unlikely to be an infection.

LIZS · 16/12/2005 11:15

Go for the nurofen, it is an anti inflammatory and that on its own may relieve it. Also make sure he is blowing his nose well and perhaps try a vaporiser at night.

thanks all, he doesn't have a temperature so will give nurofen and see how he is tomorrow, he just says his ear is sore, he is quieter than usual (which is no bad thing ) and a slight cold but nothing major, all the children at school seem to be ill at the moment as well!!

Funnily enough dd has woken up the same and is currently snoozing again . No temperature and only a bit of a cough. Now to persuade her to take Nurofen...
