A close relative in her 30s has just found out that she has ovarian cancer. They have told her it is the size of a grapefruit and she finds out on friday what they will do and if it has spread, so tell me does this sound like a late stage cancer and what are her chances. The whole family are devastated, she has only beenn married a few weeks.

Obviously it's big which isn't good but I don't think size is indicative of whether or not a cancer has spread (and it's whether or not it's spread which is important). Some cancers can be small but spread quickly and some can be big but spread slowly. Also some grow quickly as well so it could be that even though it's big it's not been there that long and hasn't spread. Basically there are lots of unknowns and the only people who know at this stage are your relatives doctors.

Obviously it's very upsetting and I hope things aren't as bad as they seem. If it's been caught early ovarian cancer is very treatable. Try to remember that until you know differently (and don't google!)
