Febrile Convulsions- Worried sick she'll have another.

My daughter who is 15 months has just had her second Febrile Convulsion. I didnt see the last one as she only woke me up after it had happened (moaning and limp). It was the most scariest thing I have ever seen, she stopped breathing and I panicked. I had read up on them but I never heard that they actually stop breathing when they fit. I called an ambulance and we stayed in hospital for tests which were all fine. I still feel really upset every time I think about it and can't stop crying because I'm so scared of her having another. I've even gone off my food. Has anyone else been through this? If so, how did you cope?

Dumpy, I know exactly what you are going through, my DS has had two in the past when he was two and he's now four, he's not had once since but we've been up half the night last night with him and a high temp.

It took me about three months to get over the shock of seeing my boy laying on the dining room floor, not breathing and fitting. I couldn't eat, sleep or function normally or talk about it without choking up.

I assume you have been given instructions on what to do when she gets a temp, strip her off, tepid baths, calpol etc.

You will get over the shock eventually but you'll always be on your guard which is a good thing so you can prevent another one.

Thanks for replying. It does make me feel a bit better hearing off someone else who has been through it. The docs did advise me on what to do (recovery position) if it does happen again. I'm just so scared of when or if it does. I know I used to have them when I was little so I know she's got them off me, and I had more than a few. Im not a regular on Mumsnet so I don't know what CAT means, sorry.

Did they give you all the tips to prevent one as well? My DS has had quite a few rapid high temps since his fits but we've been on the ball and put him in a tepid bath as soon as they start (cruel to be kind - he cries but it's better than fitting!), we give him Calpol and Nurofen for kids alternately and keep him cool generally. Touch wood - we've been okay since. If you're not sure what to do, NHS direct will have lots of advice.

I went on a first aid for children course too which made me confident about my ability to deal with him during a fit as well as the ability to resuscitate him if necessary although I was told that stopping breathing during a fit is common and they always start again! Little comfort when you're watching. I did feel better after the course, see if there is one you can go on locally.
