Baby with a cold won't eat

He's had a cold for about 4 days, giving him paracetamol suppositories (yuk) cos he just kept spitting out the calpol, and will have only about 6 oz of milk in total in 24 hours. he eats about a third of his breakfast and won't eat anything else at all during the day. I'm getting worried. Anything I can do? He's nearly a year btw.

Poor thing!
If he's very congested give fluids little & often as he'll struggle to feed with a blocked nose. If not congested he might have a sore throat in which case you can buy some stuff called difflam spray to help make it less sore when he feeds. HTH

your poor little ds. My dd2 had a horrid cold all of last week and still has a hacking cough. I'm sure he will pick up on his appetite - have you seen a GP? although they would prob just say calpol, sleep etc .... no big advice!
if you really do think he is dehydrated then dioralyte is a good re-hydrator but it doesn't taste great - you could try a syringe to get it down him.
Hop he feels better soon, it's awful when your kids are ill.

Lots of fluids, don't worry too much about the food, perhaps vitamin drops, some can be put into a drink, ask your local chemist.

If still concerned by Friday go and see GP, get his chest and ears checked out before the weekend.

Lots of fluids and cuddles

mummytosteven · 30/11/2005 20:18

I wouldn't worry at all about solids, just try and get him to drink as much fluids as possible. When DS had colds at a similar age he would completely go off his solids. Seeing as you're concerned, I would take him to the docs as well anyway, just to be on safe side.

see my thread abou my disagreement with nursery. Lots of support there for the "as long as he's getting enough milk and fluids" line!

Feistybird · 30/11/2005 20:30

ah bless, they go off their food cos they can't smell or taste. Echo what everyone else says, try and get fluids down him - I was told by a doc a couple of years ago now that small fruit lollies wee a great way of getting fluids into a reluctant small child, to ensure they didn't get dehydrated.

Thanks all! Went to see the GP yesterday, she gave me the paracetamol suppositories. He doesn't drink any water or juice normally, so there's no chance of that now he's ill! But I'll just keep persevering I guess. He won't let him starve, will he??

My dd (11m), was the same last week. Normally she eats for england, but totally went off solid and although she had her usual 3 7oz bottles, she was sick and awful lot due to all the mucus on her chest - lovely! I just gave her a little milk at a time and water. Put some children's olbas oil in her room at night so she could breathe more easily and sleep better. She wouldn't take calpol either. Don't worry, they won't starve themselves and the cold will get better eventually. Hope DS is better soon

My ten month old has been off his food for a fortnight. He has had a tummy bug followed by a cold. He's drinking milk (bf so don't know how much) and seems to be making slow progress. I'm just trying to keep his fluids up.

evansmummy- Hows DS today ?

evansmummy · 02/12/2005 22:11

Thanks, mummydear for asking! He seems to be a it better today. he had some tea!!! Three cubes of lentil and veg puree and a petit filous, so that's a real result!! Seems to be on the way out. Thanks for all your support, it's just worrying when it's the first time he's been properly ill!
