Mirena coil and Mooncups

Hi all; I've recently decided to give the mirena coil a go due to heavy/painful periods. I'm having it fitted later this week on what should be the tail end of my current period - I was wondering whether I'd be able to use my mooncup immediately afterwards? I realise that I might be sore and not want to, but could the slight "suction" effect of removing a mooncup cause any problems with popping the thing out or moving it or what-have-you?

I did tell the GP I use one and he didn't say "oh you can't you one of those with a mirena in..." so I've been assuming they're compatible but I don't want to rip the thing out by mistake three hours after getting it fitted!

When I had my mirena coil fitted I asked this question. GP said probably best not to use it for a few months as the coil needed a chance to embed probably. I haven't had a period since (yay!) so my mooncup is just sitting there in a drawer.

Hmm... I guess if the spotting/intermittent bleeding is only light that wouldn't be a problem, but I've heard a lot of horror stories about month+ long periods after a mierna is fitted and I wouldn't want to suffer one of those with just tampons and towels to save me from a Carrie-like nightmare!

I will ask my GP when it's done too, but better to be safe than sorry I suppose.

Nope, you cant use mooncup or tampons for the 1st month. Pads/liners only sadly - you can start using them again from your first proper period after insertion.

tbh I found mine so light that the mooncup has even been made redundant in favour of a really thin pantliner!!

I'm on to my second Mirena (so have had one for 6 years!), I had very little bleeding so I suspect you won't need to consider a mooncup.

Oh gawd just towels? I really hope I don't get normal period level of bleeding after the insertion then or it's going to be a horror show - I'll just take time off work and stay in one room of the house with plastic sheeting over the floor, furniture and walls!

At least it wouldn't be a forever ban on mooncups if it doesn't kill the damn things dead then - I'm just really hoping it does!

Yup, sadly just towels. Its two fold - one because of the tugging and the risk of pulling the coil out of place, and secondly because of risk of infection where something has been forced through your cervix.

TBH, Mine wasnt too bad post insertion, and I had it fitted for periods so heavy I could overfill a mooncup in an hour. So fingers crossed for you!

I had a copper coil and the first time I used a mooncup the suction effect made my threads retract They had a bit of a job getting it out when the five years were up.

No one told me nOt to use my moon cup! I did and I assume my coil in still in

Actually it must be there because I haven't actually wanted to have sex so that's a tick against the side effects list!

I used tampons after having mine fitted, could not use pads of any kind - yukk, anyway no problems arose.

Well I survived having the mirena fitted this afternoon; it wasn't too bad and I was in and out within 20 minutes from start to finish. The doctor chappy was very good at explaining it all as he went along, and there were only a couple of seconds that actually hurt although the whole time the clamp was on I'd describe as "uncomfortable sensation I'd like to stop if given the option". Not something I'd like to do every day but fingers crossed it will work for me and make some of the rubbishness of periods go away for a while!

I did ask about mooncups and he seemed to think there wouldn't be any problems - suggested I might want to wait until tomorrow to let it settle a bit, but I don't know. I don't want to risk it straight away! I'll see how the bleeding goes.

I specifically asked the consultant I went to and he said it would be fine and didn't say that I needed to wait.

Maybe it depends how easy insertion was? I was specifically told by my doctor to avoid anything like tampons because of risk of infection and PID - but my insertion was rather traumatic (very tight odd placed cervix, doctor said it was the hardest she'd ever done in 20 years) and my cervix was rather traumatised afterwards!

The rule is no tampons or sex for 3 days post insertion then all fine.mooncup would be same. Infection risk is associated with insertion and increased for first 20 days then back down to normal.you should be shown how to check for threads...ask. essentially lie down or one leg up on loo (whatever's easier) then a finger up inside until you feel something hard like the end of your nose then feel for threads which feel like fishing wire.there are 2 but they wrap around each other so ok to feel one. Hope that helps. I insert coils BTW ...most ladies love their mirenas minority hate them,normally because bleeding doesn't settle...but for most no periods after first few months!

Thank you EDD24may that is really helpful to know. Had mine done 2 weeks ago but my DR didn't know what a mooncup was so I was still unsure.
