Is it normal for the gum around a loose tooth to become all red and angry looking?

DS (6) has his first loose tooth. I can't remember that far back, but he's complaining about it hurting and being painful and when I brush his teeth, it really hurts him even though I'm really careful. Is this normal, or should I take him to the dentist?

Sounds like an infection, doesn't it? The dentist will probably take it out for him.

Is it possible that his new tooth is already there. This happened with ds1 and caused pain for a while even before his tooth became loose. In the end, we had to go to the dentist as the new tooth was coming through fast and was being forced into growing the wrong way by the baby tooth. The dentist took the first two teeth out with no distress to ds1 at all.

Sounds like gingivitis ( gum disease ) ... use Corsodyll mouthwash

Ooh. Sounds like he does need to see a dentist then, this is obviously not normal.

Thanks all.
