Fungal toenails (nice) - any good treatments?

Sorry I know it's rank - my big toes are itchy under the nail and a bit white/ridged. Think it's a fungal infection - seem to remember that if you go to GP they send off toenail clippings which take weeks to grow culture, before they give you treatment. Anyone know of any good over the counter treatments that actually work?

I've had some success with tea tree oil. I used to put a few drops onto the infected nail twice each day. It's also best to walk around in bare feet whilst in the house as the fungus thrives if it's tucked away in socks/slippers.

Make sure you don't put so much oil on that it ends up on your skin as it can make it a bit sore and itchy.
