Ds is 3.2 and he has a really really bad cough, he is constantly coughing and also heving sometimes. He also has a very bad cold.

I have been giving him cough medicine and also rubbing vicks stuff on his chest, its eased a little but still alot of coughing.

Is there anything else i can do i know these things are worse at bedtime so i want to be prepared, ds does get very very ill when he gets flu, last time this happened he got that bad he was gasping for breath & we had to call an ambulance cause i thought he was going to stop breathing.
He went to hospital that time & he did have croup but it just scares me when ds is ill cause he just seems to be very badly effected never just mild.

Any suggestions on things i can do would really help prepar me.

TIA

Dd always gets a croup like cough whenever she has a cold. We prop her bed up on books, give her hot baths, put her in the bathroom with the shower on (to get some steam in her). The doctor has given her an inhaler to use at bedtime just to relax her breathing tubes.

My 3.5 year old has had a really shocking cough for ages now. Awful isn't it. He has been to the doc who said he had a chest infection and gave him anti-biotics which did nothing whatsoever so I regretted giving them to him.

He's finally on the mend now but it has been about two months of terrible coughing.

I asked my GP friend and she said she would probably prescribe a brochio-dilator to give him at night, just for a couple of weeks. (That's the blue inhaler asthmatics use to losen their chest).

I didn't go down this route in the end, but I thought I'd tell you anyway.

Oh your poor ds, I hope he gets better soon and it doesn't get 'serious' this time although, constant coughing can be pretty awful in itself.

You could try putting a wet flannel (wrung out) on the radiatior in his room and a piece of tissue with one or two drops of olbas oil in the room too, again, near the radiator. This helps my ds sometimes.

Mum2oneandBump, you are the only one that will really know when it is time to take him to the doctorif the cough is continuous, fluid could be settling into his tubes and he will probably need an antibiotic. You have gotten great advice here, raise the end of the bed where his head it, burn the olbas oil in a bit of water and massage will help. You want to massage his neck, from just below the ear lobe down to the collar bone and all around the underneath of the collar bonevery gentle massage will help him drain. I hope he is better soon.

Both my children have just had a virus and a bad cough. We have tried everything and I mean everything to try and alleviate the coughing as both of them have mild asthma which only flares up when they have colds.

The best thing we have used this time though and it really has worked is Medised. It drys up the mucous in the nose which drips down the throat and makes them cough at night. They have both also had a temp and generally felt unwell so this as helped with this too but it is the cough that has not been so severe in both of them. The thing with Medised too is that it has a antihistamine in it which helps them sleep too when they feel unwell. Its a godsend for us and we will never be without it through the winter.

All the other things people have suggested do help but this time we have found that the medised has settled them and made them feel comfortable plus has eased the cough too.

There is nothing worse than listening to your poor child coughing, I hate it but this really does help!!!

I have the same problem with both boys. why is it some kids don't seem to be able to shake it off? I'm going to try medised I think.

Thanks for all this great advice and tips i will be trying it out. It only really started today when he woke up, he seems ok in himself so far so i am not worrying as much as i would be if he was not himself and refusing food etc.

It is so awful when they are ill, it really does scare me with ds as when he gets flu, colds or anything it effects him very very badly he never just has it mildly.

He has had blood tests and things as they though his immune system was not working properly due to when he was one he had suspected menengitis, he was so so poorly and spent a stint in hospital.

I think this is just flu and i have my fingers crossed it does not get worse, i am going to see how we go tonight and what hes like in the morning then maybe a trip to the docs i like to catch things early with him so don't want to leave him like this to long.

Of to try and sort out his pillows and get dp to give him a neck massage.

Thanks again and anymore ideas more than welcome.
