Please help me, i'm in agony with sciatica

I went to A&E last week because i was in lots of pain and struggling to walk/stand up and my foot was numb. I was prescribed diazepam, co-codamol and ibruprofen.

I then went back to the GP on Friday because i was panicking my painkillers were running out and got given a bumper pack of co-codamol and the promise of a referral to physio if it doesn't get better in four weeks.

I'm in agony if i try and drive or walk for more than a few minutes. I feel sick most of the time and i hate being in this pain.

The pain is now mostly in my ankle and lower leg. I promise i'm not normally a wimp with pain and managed to give birth three times without even a whiff of gas and air but this is flooring me. I have to keep dropping to the floor to try and keep straight to lessen the pain.

Any experience or advice anyone can share with me?

Brilliant news...and it's great for you to know that you now have a degree of control...and a bit of a plan!

It will take time...but every day will be a step towards healing.

Keep up with the exercises...it's well worth it!

Hi glad you got on well with physio. I had this starting in March-really bad pain in leg and ankle. Had physio which helped a bit but after 10wks was still not much better so he recommended I saw a neurosurgeon. Had MRI which diagnosed a prolapsed disc. These usually sort themselves out apparently but mine did not so I had a minor op to remove the part of the disc that was pressing on the nerve. Leg pain totally gone jst have to be careful with my back for the next 3 months. I also have 3 young kids and it was a nightmare.
Hopefully yours will sort itself out but please do not suffer in pain for too long before seeking specialist help-your GP will be able to refer you.
Best of luckx

I know what you are going through. My GP is referring me for an MRI scan. It could be months. It costs £900 privately. I'm not eating. Have no appetite and feel nauseous and exhausted.

Is there any position where it eases it? I only once had sciatica. It came from nowhere and was agony. The only positions that eased it were:

  1. To stand up with my leg on a table at hip height, knee sideways on the table. Bizarre I know but I spent hours in the dining room like that.
  2. Lying on the sofa on my back with my leg hooked over the back of the sofa at the knee, turned outwards.

Painkillers made hardly any difference. The pain was like being electrocuted.

Both very ungainly positions 😳

You need someone to come to you so phone for a home visit if you haven't already. They will probably give you morphine or diazepam which relaxed the muscles and the spasm is relieved. Good luck!
