Pre-diabetes / just become diabetic

I had gestational diabetes during both pregnancies, and have recently been feeling tired / thirsty - the usual warning signs.

So, have bought a monitor and am taking my blood sugars three times daily. The daily levels are fine, but the fasting ones are between 7 and 8 - which is indicative of actual diabetes, not even pre-diabetes.

So I'm in for it, aren't I?

I have made an appointment with my GP, obviously, but in the meantime, is there anyone else who has been through this can tell me what is likely to happen?

(I have been exercising more and eating better during the last year, and lost a stone out of the 3.5 I needed to lose. But there is MUCH more to be done).

a friend was diagnosed with borderline type two last year. he got diagnosed via glucose tolerance test, and then IIRC had his eyes and feet checked out. think it was all done fairly quickly

You will be OK, it does suck to start with but once you can get your head around it you will find that all it means is you really do need to keep to a healthy lifestyle. You can still eat chocolate, in moderation and you get free prescriptions :). Treatment has really come along. Also I am not a doctor but I don't think 7 or 8 is that high. Mine was 27 when I got diagnosed

Are you Type II Sunny? Do you need insulin or does diet, exercise and careful; eating work for you??

Type 1 since I was 12, I'm not so knowledgeable about type 2 I'm afraid

sunndydays · 07/06/2011 19:44

Sorry should have said insulin 5 times a day minimum

paddyclamp · 07/06/2011 19:47

7 or 8 isnt mega high...what is it 2 hours after food?

Mine was 45 at diagnosis :O

sunndydays · 07/06/2011 19:48

Hey paddy :) that is super high, did you go into a coma?

StyleandBooty · 07/06/2011 19:53

Golly!

2 hours after food I am between 4 and 6. It is only in the mornings that I am between 7 and 8. 7 is the threshold for diagnosis.

That is great for after food but I expect they will want to do something about your morning reading, I like mine to be below 6

paddyclamp · 07/06/2011 22:38

Hi Sunny! Yes i did!!! I was 9 at the time!

Style...i agree with Sunny, after food those levels are great...but the fasting one ever so slightly raised...def not cause for alarm though i don't think
