What support can my MIL expect as a carer?

My MIL is full time carer to her 74 year old dp. They thought at first he had Parkisons but that has now been ruled out and are awaiting a diagnosis. Next consultant appt is Jan 2006

He can't be left alone, is incontinent, falls over alot, and she has to dress/bathe him and take him to the loo. The falling is a big problem as he is a big man and vety heavy for her to lift. It is getting to the point where she is calling my dh or his brother to go and help get him off the floor

She is understandably struggling with all of this as it is pretty much 24/7. Is there any help/respite she is entitled to and where would we start?

Contact your MIL local Social Services department and explain the situation as you have here.
They will be able to give her advice and support she needs. They can arrange for extra help to come into the home if needed and also give advice about respite breaks for him. They will also be able to help with equipment needed in the house for him. Hope this helps.

Would also suggest you contact Age Concern as they may be able to help too.

Try Social Services in any event though you may have to keep badgering them in order for them to do anything.

Your MIL needs to ensure she is claiming all the benefits she is entitiled to receive.

Also I would advise that she talks to his GP, who may be able to put in place some support. If you can get hold of social services, they can let her know what benefits he may be entitled to get
