How long should it take for a black eye to heal?

My 7 year old DS tripped in the garden during the holidays and fell on his face. His cheek swelled up a great deal pretty quickly, but I put something cold on it which brought down a lot of the swelling. He was OK in himself so I didn't take him to A&E. It came out as a nasty black eye, which was a bit tender, but he said that it didn't hurt to move it etc.

3 weeks later the black eye has pretty much gone, but there is still a small amount of bruising and swelling on his cheek. He says it doesn't hurt unless you press hard on it. The bruising is yellowy brown rather than purple, so isn't new.

Is it normal to take this long to heal? Or should I take him to be checked just in case he has broken something?
