This morning when I got up, I had the most horrendous shooting pains from my bottom upwards.

This has been happening periodically for a few years, but seems to be getting worse more lately. This morning I was in so much pain I likened it to being in labour. I thought I was going to be sick so grabbed a bag just incase.

There was a lot of fresh red blood on my stool (sorry) however I do have piles which are not at all painful, but often bleed. There did seem an awful lot of blood though. My stools have always changed in colour, texture and shape almost daily, so no clues there.

I'm still experiencing pain now, although alot milder - possibly wind, mainly when I sit down or stand up. Does anyone know if I should be worried that it may be something more serious or is this just normal?

This sounds hideous - go to your doctor and ask to be refered to the relevant consultant.

Have it checked, some food intolerances can irritate the bowels to the point of bleeding, it may also be a hernia (sp?), although, considering the pain... any chance of it being caused by those little veins in that area whose name I don't remember but may be painful and can break causing the bleeding?

A couple of the girls at work said they have experienced this, so don't want to over-react, but the pain was gut wrenchingly bad.

Could it be an anal fissure . Very painful, although pain mostly on passing stools IME. Can bleed too. The pain is likened to having glass pressed into you.

I think you need to visit your docs.

Thanks for the link Gingernut - yes, it could be that. If I am in as much pain tomorrow morning, I will make a doctors appointment.

hi chocol8, sorry to hear about your problem,i to had all of the above syptoms(including piles!!), do you find you are also going to no2's( sorry delicate subject!!)more than once a day?i was always once a day regular as clockwork then like you had bleeding ,all shapes, sizes and colours but also ended up going 3 or 4 times a day.

you really must book an appointment with your g.p. it is probably nothing to worry about, any thing to do with bleeding mustn't be ignored , but if your like me you think the worst, but try not to. i ended up having a camera (under sudation) put through my bowel, where they found a couple of little pollups, in case you have never heard of them they are like little lumps/spots, they snipped them out and job was done, next time i went to toilet ,no blood or pain and back to regular as clock work, it was an amazing instant change. don't suffer unnecessary, phone the surgery in the morning. it won't go away . keep me posted
