lip / mouth sores 18 month old

my 18 month old has a white spot / sore in both corners of his mouth. They started off looking like a normal spot but haven't cleared up and now look a little bit bigger. Any ideas ?

My dd used to get sores around her mouth at that age, and the pharmacist said that they were caused by her licking around her mouth. He recommended slapping stacks of Vaseline on, both to help heal it up and prevent it, and it works.

is he otherwise well ? Hand foot and mouth is a virus which caould cause sores but they are usually unwell with it ?

My little one has the same thing but she is only 8 months, i only noticed it yesterday but i wondered if it was a type of thrush. If anyone has an idea what it could be or how it is caused that would be great!
