have always kept up with my smears, but since a traumatic birth with dc3 i have developed ptsd with particular dislike of anything medical. I even had my coil put in under GA.

Have put off this smear for a few months, but booked it yesterday and thought 'right ive just got to do it'. But am terrified i will look like a total freak or have a complete meltdown on the couch. Sad

Explain clearly first.

The nurses are understanding and will take as long as you need. Just breathe, stare at a point on the ceiling and count backwards from 100.

Better to get it over with. Wear an IPOD and listen to music. Just take it easy and remember there is no rush.

You won't look like a freak! Please tell the nurse doing the smear how you feel! I hate them too, not to your extent but you have my sympathy. She would have to try damn hard to damage you! Ask her to show you the tiny implement she will be using if that helps. Good luck

Sorry, I didn't mean to be flippant, I just meant that is is pretty small and harmless in comparison to instruments used in labour and childbirth. I'm afraid I know all too well how womens bodies can be subjected to assault and battery in the name of childbirth.

mosschops30 · 12/05/2011 13:53

Hi I had my smear yesterday, I got a Dr to do it and from now on I will always get him to do them, pain free, even though he said he had difficulty finding my cervix. My DP came with me, could someone go with you? Also tell them and tell them and tell them,
Funny story time, it was a bit of an education for my DP who was Shock at what it entailed Hmm, he said to me in DR hearing 'It is fine what are you complaining about it has to be done,' the pleasant reply came from the GP when he suggested that it was about time DP had regular prostrate exams, after all it was nothing to complain about, it had to be done Grin
Hope all goes well for you.
