IBS and travelling - how do you cope?

I've been diagnose with a severe IBS 10 years ago. I have my up and down moments, but sometimes is hard to cope and it really affects my quality of life: I always think twice before going out for a meal, travelling, going to the cinema, a meeting outside the office... anything that involves being away from safe zone = toilets.

My consultant told me that I could get better during my pregnancy, but no... it was a total disaster. I had a difficult pregnancy and DS was born premature 35+5weeks. The doctors never blamed IBS for causing the premature birth, my I still believe it had some influence. While I was BF it was another nightmare... I Stopped BF 6 months ago and started to take amitriptyline which seemed to help a bit.

I'm travelling tomorrow to Spain and Portugal and I've already been a couple of times in the toilet. I'm already having second thoughts about travelling...

  • what if I need the loo while taking off and landing? For some psychological comfort I use an adult nappy Blush just in case...
  • another thing I often do to avoid a bowel movement is to stop eating on the days I'm travelling. For instance, my flight is tomorrow morning at 6am so my last meal will be tonight's dinner around 6pm, and I wont eat anything till I arrive at the hotel.

How do you cope with your IBS? Any tips for travelling?
