DH is weeing blood! How worried should I be?

A few years ago Dh said his urine was blood stained. His Gp said (without any warning)
"When a man says this Gps always assume its cancer!"

DH and i were both horrified and upset.
After many very intrusive and demeaning tests at the hospital they said they could find nothing wrong with him at all.

I have since found out that blood in the urine can be an infection treatable with antibiotics, a burst blood vessel that will heal itself and least likely of all bladder cancer.

Yesterday dh said his urine was blood stained again - How worried should we be?
He is so desperate not to experience all the tests again.

Thanks for reading this far - sorry if too much information!

Take a sample to the gp's. It is far more likely to be a UTI than anything more sinister.

BudaBabe · 06/11/2005 21:03

My BIL had this recently but it was a kidney infection. Easily treatable with antibiotics.

Hope this is case with your DH.

Sorry for your dh bbb The doc was very naughty to say this. I agree probably urine/kidney infection. Hope he's ok soon.

the aches are probably his kidneys. sounds like a UTI to me. he's lucky it isn't stinging when he wees - that's the unbearable bit. get him to drink lots - cranberry and lemon barley juice are good. he needs the anti-biotics too - tomorrow.

He may have a UTI that has now extended to his kidneys.

If his GP is being a useless git I suggest he ring NHS24 and get an after hours appointment to see someone who can be bothered.

My sister was fobbed off by her GP and wound up needing IV antibiotics b/c the infection had gone to her kidneys.

karmamother · 06/11/2005 22:50

I've had wee the colour of ribena with a urine infection so yes, it definately does cause haematuria. If this is a recurring problem, it may be a good idea to get a referral to a urolgist. They know infinately more than your GP.

karmamother · 06/11/2005 22:51

oops, I meant a urologist.

Ok, at the beginning of September that happend to my god father.... he went to Dr...

it WAS bladder cancer (hes about 50)

he ahd private cover and within 4 weeks hed gone from nothing to having HAD the operation!

All went very well.... as a result i did LOTS of reasearch on bladder cancer....

It is one of the most treatable cancers with the highest survival rates you can get particularly in men!

also the way they tret it mean you dont have lal the conventional cancer therapies that make your hair fall out etc!

so im not saying it IS cancer but, IF it was... and you were a man i thinking based on all the research ive read and you had to 'choose' a cancer i would choose bladder cancer!
