He's really suffering and the medication doesn't seem to be working. Any suggestions?

Cherries - and specifically cherry juice definately helped here. If you google gout and cherries there is lots of info. No idea how it works but it was definately more effective than the drugs the GP prescribed. HTH.

My DP has suffered with gout for almost 10 yrs - he is late 40's.

The only pain killing medication which has worked is Volterol.

has he been prescribed a specific drug? Can't remember the name of it, but it helps to meatabolise the urea crystals.

A strict low-protein diet helps, with no booze.

Thanks for all of your suggestions.
He's on Volterol which has helped a bit. I'll definitely suggest he tries the cherries though. I'll also try and persuade him to give the booze and protein a miss, though that might be a bit more difficult. I'll tell him he won't get any more sympathy unless he cuts out the beer!

avoid booze, mushrooms and tomatoes.

my dad gets gout, and he takes meds, which means he can eat the stuff that he shuoldn't be eating.

it's all to do with purines.

Devil's Claw.
You can buy tables from health food shops or online.

I'm pleased to report that the gout is now much better and the hobbling and groaning seems to have died down. Let's hope it stays that way! Thanks again everyone.
