Private medical insurance

Anyone got any experience of this? Is it not better just to pay as you go?

I've only ever had company based private medical insurance. However, I think paying for insurance is worthwhile. I recently had a shoulder op. It probably cost about £3k and I'm not sure we'd have wanted to find that amount of cash.
