Do I need to see my GP about a blocked ear?

I have had a really bad cough and cold for almost 2 weeks now. Well over a week ago my left ear became blocked. It did clear for a day or so but its backed to being blocked. I have tried holding my nose and blowing but if anything that made it worse.

When I was little my mum would put olive oil in my ear but I'm guessing this was for wax and I don't think this is a wax problem. I can hear it crackling sometimes, which is about all I can hear with that ear now.

If I just leave it will it clear up or do I need to go to my GP?

I would if you've had it a couple of weeks. I was the same except I left mine for a couple of months till I actually couldnt hear anything at all. Dr said it was the nastiest ear infection she'd ever seen! Antibiotics cleared it up in a week.

Ditto, I had a bad infection - was told off for leaving it too long.

Try the garlic cure if you prefer natural ;put one third of a clove with half fresh lemon juice and 2 to 3 fl. oz water, a date for flavour\sweetness liquidise and drink fast 2 to 3 times a day.....

...cont. it totally cured a bad toothache i had. Also you could try cutting out dairy as i get cold and blocked ear symptoms when i eat dairy (which I don't normally so i know).

I had a blocked ear with no infection. Sounds just as you describe. Dr. said put olive oil in for 2 weeks and then have it syringed by the nurse. Much relief when it was done. I could hear again!

We have a minor illness clinic with the nurse at our surgery, is handy for stuff like this (which I always wonder is worth seeing a GP for).

NoseyNooNoo · 06/04/2011 19:28

I have phoned the surgery but nothing available until next week. I might do the olive oil trick tonight.

Garlic is a natural anti biotic, you could also try googling earth clinic which gives advice on alternative cures for everything.

I got an appointment this morning. He's given me a steroid nasal spray.
