I have always been quite irregular. Can sometimes go 2-3 month in between. However hadn't had period for 5 months.I put this down to stress,a lot of issues going on in life. However it has now arrived with a vengeance.I am now 10 days in with no sign of it ceasing.Last week the pain was so crampy and bad i thought i was going to pass out,and i am still in quite a lot of pain and feel exhausted.Do you think i should see Gp or just live with it and stop being a wimp???

I think you should see the gp - could just be you are in early menopause, but would be worth checking out

Don't put up with this.

I would see your GP with a view to getting a referral to a gynaecologist. I say gynae as these types of problems are often outside a GPs remit of understanding.

Stress alone would not cause such problems to arise. Irregular periods are more often than not caused by hormonal imbalances. Blood tests should be done to determine the exact cause. Common causes of irregular periods include polycystic ovaries and or thyroid gland problems.

Painful periods as well warrants further investigation.

Could you have been pregnant and suffering an early miscarriage?

cadburysgirl · 02/04/2011 09:27

i suffer from pcos, which means going without a period for months and months and then when i do get one it can last weeks and be heavy and painful.

Get your gp to do a blood test

I have had pcos (polycystic ovarian syndrome) and cadburysgirl is absolutely right. But my first instinct was to agree with bunnyfrance. With the pcos and associated hormone imbalance I had several miscarriages and with the irregular periods I never knew whether it was or was not a miscarriage.

Definitely go to the GP, if nothing else they can give you nefamic and transxemic acid to reduce the bleeding and stop any pain.
