under the new rules if you are classed as serverly partially sighted then you can claim high rate mobility,

the criteria is that you need a visual acuity of 3/60 or 6/60 but with a loss of vision of filed,

i have nystagmus which is an inviluntary shaking of the eye, when im tired/stessed or ina bad light it gets worse and every thing is literally dancing infront of my eyes,

when i went for an eye test this morning, i coyld read 2 top 2 lines out of my right eye but only the top big letter our of my left eye,

when he uncovered both eyes and i had my chin on a chin rest thing so my eyes were staring straight at the eye chart my eyes went into overdrive lol and i couldnt focus enough to read any letters on the chart,

with nystagmus what alot off sufferes do is too find a null spot wheere you tilt your head a certain way and that slows down the speed of the nystagmus thus making it easier 2 focus,

but the upshot is that the optometrist says that my eyesight isnt bad enough for hrm which im gutted about as if i were to be entitled then the fact that i would get hrm would then be a passport to other things eg the taxi card scheme,

the optometrist felt bad for me as he said he knows the eye test is under certain conditions eg light where as my "real" sight changes due to the vconditions im in at the time,

imm not entitled to any aids to help me so when im out i get treated as a sighted person so eg i was on the bus with dd sat in the disabled seats and i had an old lady making comments to me as she said i shouldnt have been in there,

sorry im ranting now lol, dont expect anyone to reply to this, just wanted 2 get it off my chest x

Was this sight test via a hospital optometrist or one at a usual opticians?

(Sorry for ignorance)

If it was the latter could you goto Gp and get referred to hospital opthalmology department??

Would you still qualify for lower rate mobility??Maybe worth a shot.

Sorry it all sounds very crap when you are struggling like this x

tbh everyone is going through this atm.

The reality is that people with VI haven't been entitled to hrm until now anyway, so while it's obviously frustrating, you're not losing something you already had iyswim.

I'm guessing as you're registered as partially sighted you have a free bus pass?

What aids do you need in order to get by?

Fwiw the disabled seats are generally intended for buggies/wheelchairs which might be why you had strange looks from other people. If I use the bus I do sit there with guide dog but if a buggy/wheelchair got on then I do move as dog can be tucked under the seat, I don't feel I should be sitting in a disabled seat purely by virtue of having a disability.

hiya, i dont get any aids for my vision, the only thing i get offered ina magnigying glass, when you get hrm in our borough it would open the passageway for me to get home help (help with the kids) i could get the taxicard so i could take the kids to school in a taxi rather than having to battle public transport every morning and night. i just feel fed up as when im using bothn eyes to gether i cant read the top line so in that sense i do qualify but its only because when i had the test today they test each eye seperatly and my nystagmus stays slightly more under control thus enabling me to go slightly further down the board, but in real life situations, i cant see cars coming/ cant read bus numbers,

cant even see the green man to cross if the sun is in my eyes, every day is such a struggle and at present im entitled to no help,
