Will a dentist work on a tooth that has an infection?

Suddenly got an incredibly bad toothache yesterday evening. Went to the OOH doctor and he said there is infection in the gum. He prescribed antibiotics and pain relief.

As it is Saturday I'm not sure if I will be able to get to a dentist anyway but just wondering if there is any point as I think dentists don't work on a tooth that is infected.

I have enough pain relief and antibiotics so would it be best to wait til Monday and go to my usuall dentist?

When I've seen a dentist with an infection, I've been given antibiotics and told to come back after the course - I don't think there's much they can do apart from that. So I'd say wait till you can see your own one on Monday, since you've already got the abs. Hope the pain relief starts working quickly!

Hi

This happened to my mum recently. She had an infection in her gum and the tooth needed to come out but the Dentist wouldn't work on it until the infection had gone. She was given a dose of ABs and went back once she had finished them. Trouble was there was stil some infection but the need to remove it was greater so she took it out.

In shortSmile wait til Monday at least, unless your face is puffed up like a Hamster cos it's doubtful they will treat it yet.

I had an infection a month ago. Thye dentist said he couldn't work on the tooth whilst infected, and I had to take a course of anti-biotics for a week first. It did sort the pain out after a couple of days, and the root canal wasn't bad (and I'm a wimp!).

Wait until the infection passes. My dentist tried to sort out a cracked tooth but it hurt like hell! Even after two injections.
Left it a couple of days and then no problem, no pain.
