DD is on asprin for a unknown blood vessel condition. This morning there was blood in her poo when I changed her nappy, she has been to hospital who have done bloods and it shows no bleeding now. Her consultant feels it is an asprin related bleed, anyone any experience?

Well, there has been a warning on aspirin for those who are on it long term for heart condition and it's no longer regarded as a safe drug to take long term.

I know it's not easy to weigh up pros and cons but my understanding is that aspirin shouldn't be given to udner 16 as there is a risk of liver failure.

Nightcat It is surely not a good idea to suggest that a medicine prescribed by a doctor is unsuitable unless you are more medically qualified than the child's consultant. Are you trying to scare an already worried mum to death?

Although aspirin is not recommended for use in minor conditions like temperatures, etc it is very widely used to reduce the rate of blood clotting in adults and, in view of the fact the child has a blood vessel disorder, it sounds like it has been a clinical decision of risk vs benefit. Children's medicines is a very specialised field as most drugs have not been tested on young children so your best bet is to discuss any worries with the consultant.

Doctors are not infallible so, if you are worried about the advice you are getting, ask for a second opinion. It would IMO be unwise to follow advice from well meaning posters rather than from your consultant especially with an undiagnosed disorder.

Hope she is over it soon.

Hi mummytopebs - we've spoken before. dd is on aspirin longterm and afaik hasn't had a bleed related to it. Which sort do you have, the dissolvable or coated? As she's little I'm assuming the dissolvable. Do you always give it after food?

nightcat - I'm sure OP's dd's doc has considered the risks and thinks they are less than the risk of her having a clot.
