I think DD (1 month) has chicken pox

Seeing as DS has just had it, despite all I was told about her probably having my immunity, I think the spots look very like DS's 2 weeks ago.

Poor baby .

We are going to the doctor soon.

poor wee thing i got it when i was 6 weeks have now had it 4 times. hope shes ok

freakyzebra · 25/10/2005 21:24

How is she? My DD had it at 3.5 months, but was fine with it; hope yours is, too.

NotQuiteCockney · 25/10/2005 21:29

I know a few people who've had this with breastfed babies, and they've been fine. I don't think it "counts" as chickenpox, for immunity reasons, IYSWIM. (She is breastfed? Or do they get immunity from being inside us too?)

PiccadillyCircus · 25/10/2005 21:33

DD does have chicken pox, but so far is doing all right with it. She is breastfed, but I was told that they should still have immunity from being inside us.

That's interesting what you say about it not counting as chicken pox - might I have to go through this again...

I'm told it doesn't count, and she may have to get it again.

Hmm, now DS2's hit 1 year, I have to find someone with chickenpox to infect him ... must keep an eye out for scabby children. Although, as I'm still BF, maybe that wouldn't count either?

JonesTheSteam · 25/10/2005 22:01

Sorry - being a bit thick here!

Why doesn't it count as chicken pox? Is it to do with breastfeeding?

DS had it at 5 months but was bottlefed? Does that count?

Coathanger · 25/10/2005 22:02

Poor BAby Piccardilly

My DS3 had chicken pox at just a few weeks old and he was fine. I didn't even know he had it until the HV pointed out a few spots on his forehead!! He had it very mildly (due to being B/F I believe) and I am aware he will probably get it again.

I hope your DS gets better very soon. XX

NotQuiteCockney · 25/10/2005 22:05

JTS what I mean by it "counting" is whether the baby's immune system recognises the virus, and can fight it off, the next time it sees it. I know that very small bf babies end up using their mother's immunity to fight off the bug, so their immune system doesn't learn about it, IYSWIM.

I don't know whether this applies to 5-month olds, particularly bottlefed ones. I hope someone with actual knowledge will be along soon ...

JonesTheSteam · 25/10/2005 22:20

He was breastfed (for about a week !!!

He had it quite severely as well (bless him!!) You could hardly see him for spots!!!

Really don't want to go through it again - really hope it counts!!!!!!

NotQuiteCockney · 26/10/2005 09:34

I think if he had it severely, it probably counts.

If I were you, next time chickenpox is going around, I'd try to get him to catch it, and see what happens, just as an insurance. (And also, if you have to go through it again, young is better than old, once they're past a year, as far as I know.) That's assuming there's no immune system problem or anything, of course.

lucykate · 26/10/2005 09:55

my ds had it when he was 7wks from his sister, he's now 21wks. he had lots of spots, in fact it took over a week until they stopped appearing and started to dry up. our gp said that if they get it bad, probably won't get it again, if its a mild case, then there is a high chance they will. in himself he was fine with it, just covered in them! we found the best stuff was boots own calamine & glycerin cream and bought a load of the bodysuits that cris cross at the fron rather than go over the head, easier to get on and don't rub the cream off. i was really worried about him at the time, but looking back, am glad to have got chicken pox over and done with for both kids as i didn't get it myself until 24!.

hope she's ok.

JonesTheSteam · 26/10/2005 10:26

Thanks NQC and lucykate!!!

PiccadillyCircus · 26/10/2005 10:47

Can't decide from this whether DD's immune system will know she's got it or not - she's spotty enough that it's obvious she has chicken pox but not immensly spotty.

Will have to wait and see in the future I suppose .
