hi,does anyone have a child on omeprazole?
DD 6wks had been prescribed it today instead of ranitadine as it wasnt working for her.Cosultant has prescibed 5mg once a day but have jiust collected them from pharmacy and are 10mg tablets,on the box it says half a tablet but also states do not crush them.Im sure he ,mentioned something about them being dispersible and im sure ive read on here that they do a suspension.
I will ring Dr in the morning but wanted to get her going on it tonight really.I know there are lots of mums netters whos dcs are on it i just hope you are on here tonight.
Thanks

You can get omeprazole suspension; ds2 was on it for months and we only switched him to tablets once he was weaned. I think 6 wks is probably a bit small for tablets!
It does have a cumulative effect so it won't matter if she waits till tomorrow morning.
Hope it works; we found it brilliant for ds2.

We have the tablets and prefer them, disolve the 10mg tablet in 10 ml of water. When disolved put 5 ml into a syringe and you will have a 5mg dose.

The suspension is very expensive (£100 - 200) a bottle as it has to be specifically made off licence.

As it is such a popular medication you think by now that the suspension would be available commercially and therefore much cheaper.

ah,i see callow makes ense now.The pharmacist was very rude acting like i was stupid for getting tablets for a baby!!
tooloud do just the ordinary tabs disolve then?Dont have to be dispersable?
did anyone find it works well, its sooo scary giving meds to tiny baby, she doesnt cry much its more that she is never able to settle without squirming and pulling faces, its so sad,she also feeds constantly too.She has weight gain issues as has a cleft palate so finds feeding hard work and also had an aspiration at 1 wk probably from inhaling vomit :( so desperate to get her sorted out bless her.
Thanks for your help.

The ones we have are dispersible, I would have thought the pharmacist would have made sure of that given the age. The suspension only lasts for three weeks before becoming ineffective so you are constantly ordering/waiting for it.
Yes I hate giving my kids medicine have been medicating my youngest since he was two weeks old. I hate to say it but if reflux is requiring omeprazole at 6 weeks your dd is probably at the worse end of it and it is a case of balancing the meds against growth until she outgrows it (we have been here before with one of my other children). Once you get the dose right and don't miss any she should be more settled. It sounds like you have had a rough start.

from my dd was two weeks old she had to have tablets for her thyroid. the consultant said that the liquid wasn't as effective as the tablet. we had to give her one and a half tablets, we got a pill splitter and pill crusher and when crushed mixed them in a little milk draw it up in a syringe and give it to her just before a feed, when she was hungry and wanted it. she took it fine and it became part of her bedtime routine. she now at 19 months just takes the tablet normally. the tablets didn't really dissolve that week, the mix was always a bit gritty but she took it.

Thanks all,yes it has been rough, its hard to say about the reflux being the bad end or not as its the silent type, she isnt that sick but its constantly uncomfortable and miserable even the car seat, pram, sling, swing and all other usual things dont make her happy its so sad.Saw her cleft nurse yesterday and she thinks it def reflux but also as she takes well over an hr to take her feeds and thus uses all her calories just drinking!!!She is still only 4 oz above her birthweight too so today we commenece high calorei formula.I dont know if i am imagining it but i thought she was slightly improved today after only one dose of omeprazole,is that possible?Put it this way she is asleep now and im on here and have eaten and am now going to WASH wow will wonders never cease?
ps the tabs were right!!Im just tired and dopey Grin

My 2 year old is still on it (although he isn't as bad) and we went through all the various meds from about 4 wks old. We found disolving the pink tablets in tiny bit of water was OK although took ages to disolve. (Check with the pharmacist the exact amounts think we did 1.5 or 2.5ml water which is less than what it says but the hospital advised it, getting 5ml down a baby is quite hard but 1.25/2.5 is OK) The Losec MUPS is what we found the best but it was alot easier after 20 weeks when we could add it to apple purree. Before that it got stuck in the teats of bottles/syringes and I was breastfeeding so it was a faff, he choked on the beads.

We had the suspension which is over £100 a bottle for a while but it was no better as it tasted yuk and there was quite alot so was no benefit really. Unless you can get it flavoured it isn't very good. My DS loved the Domperidone as it was sweet but spat out the Losec suspension. Good luck!
