Big toe broken, now whole foot swollen

I dropped a wooden chopping board yesterday which landed corner first on my big toe nail.

I think its broken, have broken a lesser toe before. The nail went black an underside very swollen,I put ice on and took paracetamol.
Walked DD and DS1 to school this morning and now my whole foot has swollen and is itchy.

Should I get checked out? Am reluctant as have 10 week old DS2 so dont fancy sitting in A&E for hours with him, to betold theres notmuch they can do for a toe.

might be worth having it checked at walk-in if you have got one nearby but get homeopathic arnica 30c, you will be amazed how it helps to clear the bruising

Take ibuprofen as well. It's anti-inflammatory so will help healing process. Rest and elevate it as much as possible. Strap it up.

If swelling gets worse then I'd go to a walk in centre to get it looked at.

Thanks, sadly no walk-in here either A&E or doctors tomorrow. Can I take ibuprofen when breast feeding? paracetamol is not touching the pain.
Just had a shower, my whole leg from knee down is red, and my ankle is puffed up too.

If it is swelling further up, then you need to go to A&E

Sad thought so, just trying to find someone to pick older two up.

Yikes - definitely sounds like A&E :( could be cellulitis if it's red and itchy - did the skin break at all?

notso · 28/02/2011 13:21

No pugly, it landed where the nail meets the toe. Nobody seems to be in, bum.

Did you manage to get it looked at? :(

Thanks all for advice, went to a+e, it wasn't broken, just pressure building up from bleeding under the nail which they releived by drilling a hole in my nail.
Hobbling off now to find some matching bruise coloured nail varnish Grin
