I cant remember it feeling strange.

I just woke up one day and had a deep voice.

Does he mean his voice is kind of squeaky and croaky - which will happen just as his voice is about to break?

The adams apple is just the effect of the larynx increasing in size. If he says the feeling is in his throat I would have thought that was the wrong place. If you place your fingers on your neck and swallow you can feel your larynx go up and down. when people talk about their throats they usually mean inside at the bottom.

Has he been straining his voice at all. You do have to be careful during voice change.
