Hi, can anyone help. My daughter is 5 yrs and I stopped breastfeeing when she was 9 weeks old as I developed severe mastitis. At the time I had to have 4 times the normal dose of antibiotic and my doctor said it was very bad. Although the pain subsided my breasts remained very heavy, the only way I can describe it is that it felt as though my breasts were still full of milk. Since this time I have frequently complained to my doctor of heavy breasts. My breasts have remained 3 times bigger than what they were prior to pregnancy. I have had several appointments at the breast clinic which proved unsuccessful, stating it was merely hormonal.

Three days ago I again was diagnosed with Mastitis and the glands under my arms are extremely painful as are the ones in neck. Antibiotics again, but only one course this time. I have now been on these for 3 days and feel no different.

Basically, does anyone know whether milk can remain hardened in your breast for this number of years! Sorry it's so long. Very emotional and upset nearly 5 years on now.

My mum's just had mastitis, and it must be over 30 years since she last bf. However she was sent for a scan and mammerigram (sp?) to check nothing more sinister was there causing it. (nothing was found)
