Advice on chronic PMT *please*

Can anyone offer any advice about how I can ease chronic pmt? When I look back at how badly I behaved towards my DP last week I am utterly ashamed of myself. I'm not exaggerating to say that it was like I was another person - someone who's a total bitch tbh!

I am now in the throws of the heaviest period of my life and feel more like myself in terms of happy and calm but physically have headaches and feel extremely weak.

Anyone know of anything herbal I can take? I will go to the doctors as a last resort but rather wouldn't.

Have bought multi vitamins with iron and have been taking for the last few days. I don't think I'm aneamic (sp?) because physically I feel fine when I'm not on my period.
Am brest feeding also.
I am wondering if it is connected to how many pregnancies you have, if it could be early onset of menopause (Im 37) or if it's acutally perfectly normal and to be expected.

My youngest is 13 months, so it's not my first period after child birth or anything connected with her birth.

Hi. I used to suffer aswell until I ditched the crap from my diet. I'd always read about how your diet can improve this, but never wanted to believe it. I need Ben and Jerry's when I have PMT Goddammit!!! But anyway, I went low carb to lose weight and was shocked at the difference it made to my moods and my PMT moods went!
I'm not as strict on the carbing now and had noticed my PMT creeping back, so now after more research I've been trying Magnesium supplements for the last couple of months....Brilliant! You need to take them with B6 too. I got both in Boots and I think the magnesium is 300mg. The B6 is 10mg. Both once daily.

TragicallyHip · 27/02/2011 19:50

I have just decided to do something about this too.

I read Evening Primrose Oil is good as well as 5-HTC. Have just started taking Primrose oil if that doesn't work I will give 5-HTC a shot, if that doesn't work then to the doctors I go.

It's horrible having PMS especially when I haven't realised the reasoning behind my moods.

ramonaquimby · 27/02/2011 19:53

tragicalllyhip - that's not a nod to the cdn band is it??!

TragicallyHip · 27/02/2011 20:08

what is cdn?

ramonaquimby · 27/02/2011 20:15

guess not then!

cdn = canadian

they are band from my youth!

TragicallyHip · 27/02/2011 20:28

Oh yes, sorry see what you mean. It is the band but got the name through Stereophonics. I haven't heard any of thier music Blush

Flojo1979 · 27/02/2011 22:45

Got lost with the music thing! But a few ppl seem to back evening primrose oil so i think i might try that along with the magnesium and vit b complex and see how i go on for a few months.

Flojo1979 · 27/02/2011 22:47

Bout this zoladex, bit confused, does it actually put u in to menopause?

nicole333 · 28/02/2011 10:08

Oh and don't let your blood sugars dip as that can make you cranky without throwing the time of the month into the equation aswell lol!

TitsForBrains · 28/02/2011 19:28

Hi Flojo

I had an implant every three months which effectively fooled my body into the menopause. I had no periods or any PMT symptoms but I had to take HRT and had a bone scan after a couple of years as I was at increased risk of osteoporosis.

HTH?

mizu · 28/02/2011 19:33

Ah yes the blood sugar dips. I carry snacks around with me like dates, grapes and peanuts and things and make sure i eat every couple of hours.

I have just been to the GP because of PMT. I have had it for years, but just put up with it. However I had the most awful xmas week, feeling anxious, angry etc and I promised my long suffering DH I would go to the GP.

Her advise was during the PMT week [in my case 10 days]
Avoid all alcoholShock
Eat every 2-3 hours, try to eat lots of carbohydrates-wholemeal bread/pasta/oatcakes etc
Keep hydrated-drinks lots of water
Eat lots of fruit and veg
Also take a multivit all month which has Vit Bs and evening primrose.

I have followed this for 2 months and it has worked so well for me. My DH has noticed a huge differenceSmile. On 2/3 occasions that I have forgotten to eat or drink regularly I really do begin to get anxious and ratty. Within an hour of a glass of water and something to eat I feel so much better. I really would recommend it to anyone.

Flojo1979 · 28/02/2011 21:24

Ummm maybe the dieting isnt helping, I might try the eating thing, to tbh that wk is usually when the diet goes out the window anyway!

Bump! I was going to start a very similar thread, but why not resurrect this one? I've been on the Pill for 6 months now- first Microgynon, then Yasmin. Although Yasmin worked in the past, pre DS, I have to come to the conclusion that it just fucking isn't now. Took the last pill of the cycle this morning and I've had 8 days of hell.

So, where to go from here? I have to decide whether to keep on the Yasmin for another couple of months in the hopes that things settle down, or go full-tilt for the alternative solutions.

QLB: I am overawed that you actually got proper advice from a GP! All I have ever got have been blank looks. That, or a prescription for Evening Primrose, which, AFAIK, only helps with breast tenderness- not the worst symptom for most people by a long chalk!

I have found, though, that being on a low-carb diet helps at least with food cravings- irons out the blood sugar peaks and troughs I guess. Sadly, for me it doesn't help with any of the other symptoms!

I have tried homeopathy in the past- it has helped, but not permanently. And that, unfortunately, seems to be common with lots of PMT "cures"- they work for a bit, then seem to wear off.

I'm considering coming off the pill and combining magnesium/ B6 with Agnus castus.

Anybody else had any experiences with this? And how are the OP and the people who were on the thread back in Feb? Any breakthroughs?

ihatethecold · 30/10/2011 12:17

hi there,

i have bad PMT and dreadful period pain.
i had my mirena coil taken out about 18 months ago,
my cycle is so erratic. its really annoying.

i started taking magnesium ok about 8 weeks ago after reading that it may help. i then started having anxiety problems. like the start of a panic attack, lump in my throat feeling and i couldnt work out what was causing it.
i have since stopped the ,magnesium ok tablets. (i was taking the recommeded dose) and the anxiety feeling has gone.

i dont know what to use now for PMT/Pain
doctor gave me methanemic acid for the pain/heavy periods, which helps a bit but i still have PMT for 2 weeks a month!
