I have had an incredibly itchy spot on my arm for ages, it looked like the skin was changing and flaking off. After a month of ignoring it (and going 'la la la it's not happening') I freaked and went to the doc's. My GP who said it was fine but sent me to the surgery's 'skin guy'. He looked at it under a little ultraviolet light and pronounced it not to be cancerous.

That was six months ago and it's been itchy ever since. And in the last two days (literally, 48 hours) it's come up as a mole, a proper (light) brown one. I am not a moley person, I only have two others. I am very Shock

Should I freak out again or trust the skin guy and his little light?

Go back to the GP.

What was true 6 months ago isn't necessarily the case now. I don't want to worry you, but I think you're looking for reassurance and there may well be mners who say 'oh mine's like that, it's nothing' but ultimately, that won't give you peace of mind. Only a dr can do that.

So, I would go back to the GP. Was the 'skin guy' another GP at the practice who happened to have an interest/some knowledge in the field, or was he a dermatologist?

does it have an irregular edge or is it quite round

alypaly · 16/02/2011 16:57

by edge i mean circumference

Its probably a solar lentignum. I have several, and they are very itchy when they appear - before and during and sometimes after (less so).

And yes, you should trust that skin guy and his little light - but that said, Clarnico is right: I can tell you about my little moles, and what they are, only because a GP with a little light and experience in skin things told me so Smile

Go get that reassurance for real!

Hi everyone, thank you for your answers. It has scabbed over and healed twice now and I finally have an appt with the doc and his light, though I'm thinking elibean is right about it being a solar lentignum.

Thanks so much, all.
