Any runners about?? Would you get this checked out?

Can anybody help me?? I have been running short distances for some time (usually 2-3 times a week up to 4 miles). Recently I decided to run a half marathon and started a realistic training programme. Last week was the fourth week of training and my long run on Sunday consisted of 8.5 miles at a slow pace. During the run I had no problems at all and felt fine, however within half an hour of getting home I was unable to stand on my right ankle. I have no visible swelling and my ankle is not tender to touch. A week on having rested as much as I can (with no running), I am walking better however I can apply no impact at all to my ankle, and it causes extreme pain if I attempt to walk up stairs or steps and gives way when I get out of bed in the mornings. Has anyone experienced this?? Is this likely to be a sprain/strain or should I get it checked by the doctor? I don't want to waste the GPs time if all he/she is likely to say is do the 'RICE' thing. Would you get it checked??? Thanks.

Go to the GP or if you can afford it go to a sports physio.

It definitely sounds like something you should get checked out.

Could be a stress fracture.
I have met someone recently who trained for the London Marathon last year and got a stress fracture of her fibula ( thinner bone on the outside of leg) and this year doing the same training it has happened to other leg.
Go to GP or WIC.
