Dd has finished the antibiotics for UTI, but is sore again! Help please......

Following this thread , I thought I'd start another as I'm so worried things aren't right for dd. She was complaining of slight irritation over the weekend and tonight she's all inflamed again and says it hurts when she wees. The ABs finished in the middle of last week and she was definitely showing signs of improvement, but it seems to be all starting again. I have no idea what's going on, but am also concerned about what the GP will be thinking following her questions re our living arrangements last week! We have followed her advice to the letter re bathing/hygiene (not that we weren't hygienic, but ykwim).
I just want some answers and more than anything I want to see dd rid of whatever it is that is bothering her.
Is it possible that this infection is resistant to trimethroprim? I would have thought that because she got some symptom relief that she was responding well to it, but now I just don't know.
Is there anyone who's child has suffered repeated infections like this?

My dd has repeated soreness from thrush and a tiny recurring split on her vagina, which our GP misdiagnosed and treated with anti-biotics ... which then gave her thrush again. It makes her sore when she wees, and she gets very red and inflamed. She reacts very well to Canesten and it clears it up beautifully.

Can you ask your GP to swab your daughter for thrush before he treats her for anything else? The courses of antibiotics that our GP prescribed for my dd at first definitely made her worse.

Aero - last year I had a very bad UTI and was given a course of antibiotics. Within two weeks I had another UTI and was given stronger ones. It was my GP who suggested a kidney scan to rule out any other problems. Although not the cause of the infection they did discover that I have a double kidney. I am supposed to be having another scan using a radioactive dye to make sure this large kidney isn't that way because the other kidney isn't working. Refused last year as was BF but will get on to it soon. I was told that this sort of renal system is often prone to infections.

I would ask for a referral (the waiting list can be very long) just for reassurance.

did you ask for a referral when you went last time? Could it be thrush after all the antibs?

I'd be tempted to phone the doc and ask if you could drop off another urine sample (so you don't have to go to an appointment) under the guise that you want to be 100% sure she is clear of the infection. That way they can test it to see if the infection is still there (and maybe she needs different antibs) and if it's not there, then you need to look at something else (thrush etc.). I have done that before with dd when she's had a urine infection.

I'm seeing her Weds with dd anyway as a follow up and have to take a sample then to check. The last two bouts of soreness have been proven infections Tipex, but I'll ask about that too. It could be thrush due to abs I guess. We have canestan HC which will help with the soreness, but as it's a steriod, I'm reluctant to use it for long. She was swabbed last time, but was so jumpy, I have grave doubts as to whether there was anything on the swab!!

Dh is away in LA again this week too, so I could well be doing without all this again!

poor poor you - this seems to have gone on for ages (and poor dd too)

Will ask about that too - I get thrush from time to time and it has been resistant to Canestan in the past and I've had to use another treatment. I have neither of these in the house though so will have to ask I guess.

I knew it! She wet the bed again last night, having been dry all last week while she was on abs! Here we go again. Great!

thank goodness you are seeing doc tomorrow. Let us know what he says - sounds like you need different antibs. Incidentally, was it your dd that had the worms before? I only ask because when dd had them, she got a very sore vagina (this can happen when girl's get worms) so I'm wondering whether this is still an issue. If it's not you, then ignore me!

Just wanted to say that last week I was given Trimethroprim for a UTI and was told it would feel better in a couple of days - but if I didn't to come back.

I went back as I felt dreadful and the (now) kidney infection had taken a hold. I was given Cefalexin 500mg. The doc said that although Trimethroprim was the 'drug of choice' for UTI's they were finding more recently that 60% of the time there is a immunity to it. It worked brilliantly the first time I tried it a few months back but nothing at all this time!

Both good points foxy and choc. Yes, it was dd who had worms before ad that was awful, but def not worms this time (I treated her for it when this all started though, just in case as the treatment wouldn't do her any harm anyway).

Saw GP this morning and she was extremely nice to us and very apologetic re the questions and said that she knows us and dh etc etc, but was obliged to ask. The HV has spoken with her also, so I guess she may well have conveyed my feelings/worries on the subject which I would have no problem with as they both know the case. Another sample has been sent off today to see if the infection has cleared and Dd is being referred to a paediatrician for further investigation. She also has quite a heavy amount of white substance of some sort which when swabbed showed 'general bugs', but that are quite normal she said. It is possible though that these bugs have travelled and could have caused the infection. She has prescribed Timodene (which dd has had before) to use instead of Canestan HC which has a much lower steroid content and is safe to use.
She said she was very sorry to add to my stress and that I mustn't worry any more about that, and that they are in the middle of finding out what is causing dd's problem and getting it sorted. So I will try to relax a little about it until we see the paed.

No thrush present on swab either btw.

Yes, finally foxy - thanks. Also very relieved that the GP had no intention of alarming me. Think she was surprised that I lost sleep over it!

sorry for the tangent but have just put 2 and 2 together and was wondering how your sister was doing?

Well, it's a bit hard to say foxy. On the outside, she's doing ok and taking the medication which is keeping her mood level and she's coping pretty well with things at the moment. She also needs psychotherapy which we are still waiting for - she had been referred, but the waiting list is long. I guess things are as good as they can be, but it's difficult to know for sure what's going on in her head. we've talked a lot recently (over a few bottles of wine which always helps loosen the tongue), and there are a few issues going on there which need to be resolved. We enjoyed a game of squash yesterday which was fun despite her beating me hands down - guess that'll be the ten years between us showing!
Thanks for asking though - that means a lot to know people care. She's never far from my mind.

I'm glad the medication seems to be working. I can't believe she is still waiting for pyschotherapy - I mean, if she's not an urgent referral, I cannot for the life of me think who else would be.
