Braces - NHS moulds and private brace?

Is it possible to have the moulds done on NHS and brace made privately? Heard of two friends' children doing it this way but just want to check. What advantage?

No advantage as far as I can see. NHS treatment is free for kids and I cannot ever imagine a private orthodontist charging extra for the impressions. You need the models in order to be referred though so that may be why it has been done?
