Help! I think DD may have broken my nose

She was sitting on my lap facing me and we were tickling each other. Suddenly we both leant forward at the same time and her head whacked into my nose. The bridge of my nose made a cracking sound Shock

It's pretty painful now (despite the application of a bag of peas) but hasn't bled. It feels very swollen; I can breath through it but it feels restricted.

Does anyone know how you can tell if you've broken your nose? And if so, can anything be done?

ooo sounds painful, I had a broken nose but I was 5 and can't remember!

I would just go the out of hours doctors or go hospital.

fatsatsuma · 29/01/2011 14:12

I've taken some ibuprofen and it's a bit less painful, but there's a bruise appearing, and the bridge of my nose seems more raised than usual.

I won't go to the dr or hosp I don't think - from what I can tell from googling, there's nothing that can be done if it is broken, and I suspect it's bruised rather than actually broken [hopeful emoticon - my nose wasn't my best feature to start off with]

ouch i fell over once and landed on my nose - like you i didn't think there was anything that could be done so i just let it heal.looks same now as it did before but it took as long time to stop feeling tender.

mommmmyof2 · 29/01/2011 14:15

ok well just keep an eye on it, not sure they can do anything as such but it may need a click into place or they could give you stronger pain killers.

Hope it feels better Grin

ds2 broke mine and I didn't go to the docs either.

Although he snapped something inside, septum I think, not the bridge. It never healed thoguh, it still crunches if any pressure is put on it and is a bit sore 18 months on!

Thanks for all these replies Smile

SummerRain, that sounds nasty - poor you. I think it was my septum that went crack - the bit right at the top, almost between the eyes?

No, for me it's the bit between the two nostils, it seems to have snapped in two. I have a history of breaking odd bits of cartilage though... I smashed my ear to bits when i was three Blush

lol.... I'm fairly accident prone so used to it.

Do get the nose checked out if you think it's been knocked out of place though... a few people I know have had to have them rebroken after they've healed and by all accounts it's not an experiance you'd want to go through

mommmmyof2 · 29/01/2011 20:19

How is the nose?

Dentistnotheretobejudged · 29/01/2011 20:38

Agree, if it's been squished out of shape then see someone, otherwise you just have to suck it up til it heals! Hope you're ok.

fatsatsuma · 29/01/2011 22:58

It's pretty swollen, near the top of the bridge and out on each side. And I think I'm developing two black eyes...nice.

Not sure it's squished out of shape, just swollen. I'll see how it is in the morning.

Thanks for asking Smile

definitely sounds broken.... black eyes have a tendancy to come hand in hand with a broken nose. It would be fairly obvious if it was out of place so it'll probably heal ok if you leave it but do keep an eye on it and go to the docs if you have difficulty breathing through it or the swelling lasts more than another day or so as both those things could indicate you've done more damage than you think.

I broke mine once before when I was very little... I fell and slammed my face into the shower. My mother being of the 'if you can walk you're fine' school of first aid assumed all was well and let me head off with my grandparents later that day.... only to receive a phone call from my grandmother a few hours later who was in hysterics as I'd suddenly developed two black eyes and looked like i'd been beaten up!
