Sacral dimples

Hi - my DD was born with a REALLY deep dimple just above her buttocks. I was freaking out a bit because we have a family history of spina bifida but the consultant assured me that everything was fine - that the dimple was closed (ie there was no opening into DD's spine). Of course since then I have been on the net reading stuff about sacral dimples and working myself up into a lather all over again. Does anyone else have any experience of these - why they happen etc? Also I came across a mention somehwere of a connection between sacral dimples and gestational diabetes (which I had during this pregnancy) - does anyone know anything about this connection. Thanks

absolutely fascinating thread, knew nothing about this.
bloss, marina - dd2's umbilical stump took ages to drop off, midwife didn't sign us off for ages. and then it had a little finger-like thing which was pink and didn't heal for ages, thought would have to be cauterised but wise old Irish midwife was right when she predicted it would shrink on its own.

marthamoo, shocking stuff. mumsnetters as usual know more than the docs

Thanks for that fascinating contribution, marthamoo. Learned a lot from that. So sorry you had to go through those worries, but luckily your kids sound just fine. Thanks for the advice.

Expatkat at the time the dr said he wanted to have a specialist look at it because he had never seen one so pronounced!?
My daughter does have lots of probems from her condition, she walks with a severe gait and has to wear splints, she is also completely incontinent, but we're hoping they can do something for that when she's older....fingers crossed!

I know this is a super old post. I'm an almost 25 year old who has a Sacral Dimple. I always knew I had a weird, what I call second butt. Literally it's like my crack extends too high (the skin connects then dimples again). My husband pointed out it looked like a scar so I did some digging. I doubt my mum even knew about it or the dotors looked into it.
A few years ago I found out that I have an atrophic kidney--my left one is extremely small. My doc didn't know if it was always like that or something happened alter in life. Based on what I've learned about the sacral dimple I'd guess they're related and it was also a birth defect. That said it hasn't really shown any negative effects on me except I'm always borderline dehydrated (I have 4+ litres of water a day).
I did have nerve issues with my spine and back an an infant, and still have a hypersensitivity as well as degenerative and weak spinal discs between my vertabrae.
I could have gone my whole life not knowing if DH hadn't pointed out it looked like a scar and I hadn't had imaging done that revealed my kidney. It's one of the most common birth defects so I wouldn't sweat it to future new moms. It just happens :)
