Nappy rash. DS has it really badly. Have been applying metanium and bepanthen with a bit of sudocreme in for good measure (not all at once!). Have also been applying avent magic cream. Frequent nappy changes. We have poo on our carpet from yesterdays 'nappy free time' .

It is hot, swollen, red raw and he screams every time I touch it. Never had it like this before, normally it gets a bit red but a smathering of metanium clears it up beautifully overnight.

What else can I do? I know I should know but being a nutty mother I'm considering taking him to the GP as I'm worried its infected...

Is Magic Cream perfumed?

It sounds like it might be infected Take him to the GP.

YorkieGirl's DD had nappy rash very badly, poor girl - ask her what she did maybe?

WigWamBam · 04/10/2005 21:31

Could it be thrush? If the metanium isn't touching it then I'd get him to the GP just in case.

LadyTophamHatt · 04/10/2005 21:31

well, sudocream stings like no-ones business so forget that.

TBh, if metanium isn't clearing it up then I'd see the GP. That stuff has magic powers so I'd be concerned if it didn't work.

KingPuff · 04/10/2005 21:32

Yes, I'd pop down to the gp's with him. Might be a good idea to leave out the magic cream too - it's it pretty highly perfumed.

FrightfullyPoshFloss · 04/10/2005 21:35

I've been using the MC maybe once a day. Yes I've always found metanium excellent. Will try and take him then. Glad I'm not being completely stupid. Thanks

If you've got any canesten of your own, try a little bit under a barrier cream. If it is thrush it should show a marked improvement by morning. I'd definitely see the gp tomorrow though just in case it is infected like you said.

FrightfullyPoshFloss · 04/10/2005 21:43

Lucky old me hasn't had any thrush in a long time, so no canesten about the place. Will ring GP as long as it's not magically improved overnight. Good to know there are other things we can try. SIL had some GP stuff for her DS, not clearing it, but the metanium god rid of it overnight. She kept it though, which meant perhaps he did go a night without any (bit cheeky I thought, borrowed it, kept using it, never returned!!)

YG, I meant to ask on the April thread the other day how she was - I felt very sorry for her (and you!) when it was so bad

Needless to say, I forgot about posting on the April thread...pg brain...!

Flossam, I do hope he's better soon - glad YG was around tonight!

FrightfullyPoshFloss · 04/10/2005 21:48

Having said all this, just went to check on his little bum, and it is looking much better. I think his poo is just like pure acid atm. Will review in morning.

Thanks YG. They are normally very good at the GP's at getting you in with a baby. Will ring after my dentists appointment and before I have to go into work... when did life get so complex?!

Don't apply magic cream, every time I did that with ds when he had a bad bout of nappy rash he went hysterical. The most soothing thing I found was chammomile tea. Make up a batch and store in a squeezy bottle then use a softcloth or fracrance free wipes and saturate them with the tea and use that to clean at every change. Then which ever barrier cream you prefer. It's very soothing and worked a treat.

dot1 · 04/10/2005 22:11

Hi,
ds2 had what sounds like this and the GP prescribed a combination cream of canestan and hydrocortisone, which does the trick - 1 small tube's lasted us ages, and we use whenever it flares up - maybe once or twice a month - and it's usually gone by the next day.

FrightfullyPoshFloss · 05/10/2005 08:59

It does look so much better this morning. It is still sore, but not so hot, broken or red. It's at least 50% better. So I think I'll (or well, really, he will) sit on it today and see what a good smathering of metanium does tonight!

Another one here saying stop the magic cream. Did my ds no good at all.

FrightfullyPoshFloss · 05/10/2005 19:22

Well I took him. Marked disinterest from doc. As I thought really. Have prescribed him some canesten now. He screaming now as soon as he's pooed . Think he has a bit of a dodge tummy too, so I've started given him some natural yoghurt to see if that helps. Might try popping some of that on his bum too, might be nice and cool and soothing. Forgot to get the chanomile, but might make a trip out tomorrow to try that too. Poor DS.

moondog · 05/10/2005 19:25

Poor poor babe.
Have you tried sitting him in a salted lukewarm bath or sink?
The owner of dd's nursery does this (ex m/w) and it really works.
Live yoghurt should help too,at both ends.

LadyFioOfTipton · 05/10/2005 19:32

my son used to get terrible nappy rash. i found a thin layer of metanium and then a barrier cream over the top did wonders - long term. poor bab, hope he gets betters soon
