Hi. I've had a cough for about 2 months now and have just been given my 2nd lot of anti biotics. The first lot did bugger all.

I am coughing so hard I've wet myself and even been sick. My chest really really hurts and sometimes there is a bit of blood in the phlegm (sp)

Dr said she would send me for a chest xray if it didn't start to clear up.

I was just wondering what anxray might show and is it normal to have a cough for so long

thanks Pixie - i'm feeling quiye dizzy now and can feel my blood pumping in my head and hear it in my ears. It's really horrible Sad

I don't tend to get chest problems - I can probably count on 1 hand the chest infections I've had in my whole life

Hi, I got exactly the same. My cough is luckily getting less now but I do have odd wooshing sounds in one ear - going to get it checked on Wednesday. Seen doctor a number of times over the last few months and have had two courses of different anti-biotics, second type had lots of side effects ... Anyway, I do think what I had was viral after all. My coughing was so bad that I vomitted up to 10 times a day plus went on during night as well. The following helped me a little (I use all together):

  • beconase nose spray
  • otrivin
  • anti-histamine over the counter tablets
  • humidifier on during night
  • extra pillows to sleep higher
  • regularly sipping warm tea
  • Manuka honey
  • asthma inhalers (but I am sure that this is not asthma at all).

I didn't have fever, but just really blocked nose and this horrible cough ... And yes, it all started in October and only now I am starting to shake it off. I think it is something going round because at dd's school I saw a boy coughing his lungs out and then vomitting on the pavement.

anyone idea how long i should leave it before going back. I'm just finishing my 2nd day of anti biotics, surely it should have started to improve by now???

I once googled how long coughs are meant to last, and remember being quite shocked - the average cough lasts at least 3-5 weeks and 8 weeks is, apparently, pretty normal Shock

If your chest hurts, though, thats not good - you could have pleurisy or even pneumonia. My sister had both without a raised temp, so thats not an indicator.

I wouldn't wait too much longer, but at the same time don't worry too much - coughing hard isn't necessarily related to how serious the cough IS, iyswim.
