What is this lump in my abdomen??

I have a hard lump (sounds ominous, doesn't it...) the size of a grape in the left-hand-side of my tummy. It's about an inch underneath and two inches out fom my belly button.

Went to GP, he said hernia, sent me to hospital to see consultant surgeon. Saw him this morning, he's sending me for an ultrasound. He said it's "most likely" a hernia, but he's not 100% sure because my lump doesn't hurt at all, and he couldn't push it back into place.

He said it could've been caused by my C-sections but that it was quite a long way from the scar.

I said, could I still go to the gym/ He said no, but that he'd make sure the scan appointment was soon - within next couple of weeks - so that it wouldn't disrupt me too much. ARGH! AN URGENT SCAN! Shock

I have no symptoms of anything! I recently lost weight and have gone mad in the gym, especially rowing, so could it be a hernia? I want it to be a hernia, not... Well, you know.

Yes it could be a hernia Smile

Your scan is only urgent because, as he said, he doesn't want it to disrupt you too much. Nice GP. Mine would do the same, because she'd know I'd be freaking out Wink

BEAUTlFUL · 01/12/2010 13:57

Thanks. Smile it was the consultant surgeon who said the scan would be soon, though...

Oh help, I'd give anything to have loads of reassuring replies but are you all backing away from it thinking, Shit, that sounds bad...?!

Do you get painless hernias that don't go back in when pushed?

Could the advice about the gym be beacuse he is pretty sure that it is a hernia, and he is trying to avoid you doing things that might make a hernia worse?

BEAUTlFUL · 01/12/2010 14:47

If it were to be (that terrible disease), then what would it be growing on? What is there in the lower left part of your abdomen?

I googled C**r of the bowel (it said lump on right-hand side, and I have none of the symptoms), ovary (none of those symptoms), womb (none) and cervix (none).

Is the most likely thing going to be a hernia, seeing as I've had 2 c-sections and recently started doing absolutely LOADS of exercise, including heavy-duty rowing, and abs-crunches on the machine, and classes and running and everything)?

Eviscerate... Yes he said he didn't want me to strain it.

Yes you do!

Try not to panic - it does sound like the consultant is trying to make your life easier by doing the scan quickly.

The reason for not going to the gym is that, if is a non-reducible hernia, repeated abdo muscle contractions might make it sore/worse.

TheChewyToffeeMum · 01/12/2010 14:50

That "yes you do" was to about painless, push-in-able hernias BTW.

KurriKurri · 01/12/2010 14:53

It sounds as if he thinks its a hernia. I had one operated on recently (similar position to yours) and when the doctor referred me, he said they'd probably do a scan to make sure. As it happened they didn't bother, but scans aren't out of the ordinary for hernias Smile
Mine didn't particularly hurt either and it was quite large, it did push back in though. But my dad had a hernia and that didn't push back in. HTH

BEAUTlFUL · 01/12/2010 15:09

THANK YOU! Wow, that feels better. Smile Smile Smile

My DH had a hernia and it was a lump like that..it never hurt him to push.
Also DON'T GOOGLE! I have recently been self diagnosing myself with b loody Lupus and it has driven me MAD! I have been so worried! Obsessing over signs, symptoms and pictures...don't google!

taffetazatyousantaclaus · 01/12/2010 15:24

yy to DON'T GOOGLE!!!

sounds like a hernia or poss a fibroid. both easily treated.

BEAUTlFUL · 03/12/2010 15:07

God, just got scan date through (14 Dec). Am SO NERVOUS - have asked parents to come with me!

i would say it's probably a hernia, but best to be sure. Cancer can grow on the sub cutaneous tissue (under the skin) but this is very unusual unless you have already had cancer...it would normally be a secondary, or metastatic tumour.

How quickly did it grow? Is it still growing? I believe it would also be painful if it were cancer, so most likely it isn't!

I take it you have no past issues with cancer. If not then please don't worry.

BarbaraWindsor · 04/12/2010 10:01

also does it have any pigment? Or just skin coloured?

USoRight · 04/12/2010 17:28

It could be a cyst, a fatty lump, hernia or anything really. If it is smooth and mobile it is less likely to be cancer. The waiting is hideous, but most of these lumps turn out to be nothing.

BEAUTlFUL · 05/12/2010 23:56

Oh God - it's not smooth or mobile! Argh! It's like a knotted bulge. I don't think it's growing, if anything it's getting smaller and harder to find, but that might be because being banned from the gym isn't doing my (previously almost flat) tummy any favours.

I really hate poking at it, I'm trying to forget it's there.

Thanks for posting, it really does help to reassure me.

I am going to say hernia then.

Just without seeing it!

Beautiful, I don't think you should worry too much.

Good luck and let us know!

BEAUTlFUL · 14/12/2010 12:11

It's a lipoma. Thank goodness! Smile

ItsKurriiiistmas · 14/12/2010 14:05

Oh that's good news BEAUTIFUL - is any treatment required or do they just leave it alone? Anyway, it's a load off your mind to know what it isSmile
