Anything i can do to feel better until i can get to the doc tomo?

I went to bed with virtually no voice, and a cold. and have woken up with even less voice, a chest infection and raging ear ache. There isnt an out of hours doc round here but the docs are fab re appointments so will be able to get one tomo.

Is there anything i can do to feel better in the mean time. Everything is making me cough, which is upsetting my asthma and making my throat incredibly sore. Plus i have a very wild ferral child who i need to tame before he does anything too extreme.

The cold air is affecting his asthma so outside is out. Inside is a cage to him.

Any suggestions?

Sorry to hear you are feeling like this. How about the classic lemon and honey drink? Something else I can recommend is a tiny sip of whisky when the coughing gets too much. I had bronchitis a few years ago (coughing so bad I ended up with bruised ribs) and the Dr prescribed this apparently super-strength cough syrup. It didn't do anything so I tried a small class of Whisky, just a tiny sip every now and then, enough to pass over your throat, and felt better immediately.

Hope you are feeling better soon

Will pick some lemon juice up when i drag monster ds out for a change of scenary. thanks. Unfortunately cant drink due to some meds i am on but will bear/bare it in mind if it drives me mad later. I forgot to take the meds last night so it should hvae cleared the system by thenGrin

I think i am just super fed up as i have picked up one virus or bug after another since august and being ill is getting rather tiresome.

awww... poor you!! I'm recovering from the same thing and even with antibiotics it's taken over a week! Make sure you get to the drs tomorrow!! My dr prescribed some painkillers too as I'd pulled all the muscles in my ribs from coughing so much, so ask for some of those as they're great for knocking you out so you get some sleep!
I second what Pounamu said- hot lemon and honey! Plenty of paracetamol too. Oh and don't bother with Benilyn or the like, it doesn't work- so take a spoonful of honey and don't drink anything for a while to let it work its way down your throat! Feel better soon!

The honey and lemon has helped. But i resorted to a decongestant to help with the ear ache. it has helped a lot in terms of making me feel better. I even managed to tackle the laundry monster earlier. was hoping for an early night but ds is suffering worse then i so it will be double appointment at the docs tomo and i predict a rough night. :(

Thanks for all the tips :)

onimolap · 28/11/2010 23:07

Inhalations might help loosen things up - combination of the steam and anything you can add to decongest, maybe olbas oil or eucalyptus, or something soothing like lavender, or antimicrobial like teatree?

DidEinsteinsMumDoSanta sorry you are not well. just had the same bug. it has taken me nearly 3 weeks to get my voice back and cough. i had to prop myself up in bed all night to stop me coughing. The best medicine i bought was ammonia and ipecacuana. nothing else helped. i was completely hoarse. sandersons throa specific helped to get my voice back but it tastes sooooo vile. still suffering from awful catarrh and its difficult to shift. hope yours goes quicker than mine has.

alypaly · 29/11/2010 00:38

if yu have a sore throat gargle with soluble paracetamol

BecauseImWorthIt · 29/11/2010 00:40

I hope this will help you - chocolate can be beneficial for a cough

If you can't drink, this could be the next best thing!

BecauseImWorthIt · 29/11/2010 00:41

Don't know what happened to the link - I was sure I c+p'ed it!

BecauseImWorthIt · 29/11/2010 00:41

How weird - it's disappeared again ...

BecauseImWorthIt · 29/11/2010 00:42

Try this one

alypaly · 29/11/2010 00:48

i have always found chocolate made mine worse as it is a mucolytic agent and makes you more flemmy. but if it works for you then thats great Smile

DeckTheIceWithDragonsAndHolly · 29/11/2010 01:01

I just need an immune system tbh. reaction to steroid meds back in september that cause no sleep for 4 weeks and horrific migraines has taken their toll. Asthma hadnt settled down properally with the lower strength meds so a simple cold has gone mad. plus standing outside in the cold for far too long this weekend hasnt helped.

BIWI - chocolate and i are great friends. I eat far too much of it. But i love the fact there is a medical reason for eating it. Grin

Alypaly - you feeling better? i last bumped into you late night when you were suffering fuck knows what name i was using at the time though. I will have to bear that in mind and try to try to kick the chocolate habbit for a few days.

alypaly · 29/11/2010 01:21

deck have you name changed half way though this one tooSmile

alypaly · 29/11/2010 01:24

yeah havent had a good year this year with my health. had stomach pains which landed me in hospital a few weeks ago and then i have just found out i need an angiogram because they have found something wrong with me ticker after a treadmill exercise. i cant believe all this because i try and keep so fit.

DeckTheIceWithDragonsAndHolly · 29/11/2010 01:25

I have been doing that so much recently i announched it in chat Hmm not a big deal just cant settle in a name atm. there has been alot of change here and my chaotic namechanging has kinda reflected that. Hoping when things settle the need to namechange will too.

alypaly · 29/11/2010 01:29

were you belledechocolate or keziahopes

DeckTheIceWithDragonsAndHolly · 29/11/2010 01:29

Ouch. But then again i have known some of the healhiest people suddenly have a problem because they are more aware of their bodies. i am supposed to be training on Tuesday. but am beginning to think that i wont make it. FFS not even the partially dislocated knee kept me away from training for long. But i suppose that was because i was a good girl and put in alot of time with the heat/ice anti flam routine and did the physio exercises 5 times daily. Dont like being ill. its not like you can do anything to get better quickly like you can with an injury.

Was it netball that you do?

DeckTheIceWithDragonsAndHolly · 29/11/2010 01:30

Nope have been neither of those.

DeckTheIceWithDragonsAndHolly · 29/11/2010 01:51

Its really going to bug me now. I wonder what name i was using last time we spoke.

DeckTheIceWithDragonsAndHolly · 29/11/2010 02:02

Right must make a spread sheet about who i am and when Blush. I know why you asked if i was either of those people. I was on that thread but not one of those. i think the thread we chatted on was in chat and thus disaapeared. However i think i know who i was when we last talked.
