Basically that it, he has been in Pune for the last week, he returned this morning, his hand is swollen, the bite has blistered and burst. He says it hurts, but he thinks his hand is only swollen because of the 9 and a half hour journey home.

I am so cross with him, this is his 5th time in India, last time was approx 3 yrs ago. I only thought about the malaria tablets 4 days before he went away and asked him why he hadn't taken any, he said he hadn't thought about it!

I know he is an adult and his own person etc.... but I am so cross with him!

What are the chances of him contracting malaria?

He should go to hospital and get bloodwork done. Soon.

I think Pune is a low risk Malaria area - but I agree with wrinkly he should get check out soon to be on the safe side. There are other nasties that mosquitoes can carry as well as malaria.

I've spent a lot of time in India and have only taken malaria tablets once. I went another 3 times without them because they made me feel so ill.

I got mosquito bites and they were all ok - they did swell up a bit too. But it is probably better for him to go to the docs just to get checked out.

I picked up a lot of illnesses in India, but not through bites. He needs to keep an eye on anything unusual for a while.
