I can smell a weird smell on myself

However, I can't pinpoint what it is. It's kind of sharp and chemically. Bit like marker pens but milder and not exactly that.

I'm not sure where it is coming from either but it isn't feet or nether regions!

I know some illnesses present with a peculiar smell, so since I've never smelled funny before thought I'd check it out with you lot. There's no way I'd go to a GP saying this so I hope one of you has some pointers!

i went out with someone who had a long episode of smelling fishy... it was caused by Trimethylaminuria and apparently it can cause odours other than fishy-ness.

sounds like that to me, is it like pear drop sweets?

hobbgoblin · 22/10/2010 10:20

Sorry I deserted thread - I conked out asleep on sofa!

Not dieting but am reducing bread a lot recently, but then never had it much before really.

It is less sweet than pear drops. So weird I can't liken it well to anything unfortuntely.

Have you eaten asparagus recently or anything containing pine nuts?

hobbgoblin · 22/10/2010 11:12

I've had home made lasagna with nothing weird in it, home made eve's pudding with blackberries, taramosalata and that's about it I think.

I haven't noticed it again yet today but it wasn't overpowering yesterday so will have to tell you later if I have any better smell description...

i was going to suggest ketosis too...

mousymouse · 22/10/2010 11:16

go to a chemist to get a blood sugar test done, could be diabetes (a faint nail varnish remover smell).

hobbgoblin · 22/10/2010 11:23

It is a bit like nail varnish remover actually...and I AM knackered. Not weeing in the night though.

Friend's DD has diabetes so might ask her to do a fingerprick test on me.

Does the smell come and go if it is ketosis/diabetes?

a friend of mine has kidney problems because of undiagnosed diabetes. from time to time she smells. but her kidneys are permanently damaged, if you catch diabetes in time and controll it well it should go away and stay away.

atswimtwolengths · 25/10/2010 13:12

Could it possibly be something wrong with your nose, rather than the way you smell? Has anyone else smelled it?

Apparently there is quite a distinctive smell if you have diabetes.

Ishtar2410 · 25/10/2010 13:17

My mum has diabetes, and since she doesn't manage it very well has kidney damage. This causes her to smell quite badly - a sort of sharp smell that's hard to describe, but which catches the back of the throat.

Yes, I suppose it's a bit like nail varnish remover, but stronger IYSWIM.
